Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room
The sign hangs beneath mossy oaks, so you'll have to look for the line that forms during the breakfast and lunchtime hours at this restaurant. This no-nonsense eating-house has been a Savannah favorite for over six decades, serving up down home Southern treats in the basement of a brick building that dates to 1870. The seasonal menu features a rotating plethora of traditional delights, including Southern fried chicken, okra gumbo, buttery cornbread and collard greens. You won't find a bigger lunch plate in town. Family style dining, and cash only.
I thought it was such an awsume experienceto eat at such a neat place i always wanted to eat at a resturant that had such a homey feeling. it was just great and the food was excelent can't say enough about it other than don't miss out on eating at mrs wilkes I would fly back next week just to eat there again .
We tried everything, and much of the menu was new to us. What a delightful and tasty experience. We have told all of our friends to
"run, don't walk to Mrs. Wilkes for lunch and you can thank us later!"
Waited 1 1/2 hours to get in but worth the wait. On a pleasant street and you get to know the people in front and in back of you in the line. Since you are going to be eating with them it makes it more fun.
Food is a good example of Southern cooking and you can eat all you want. A fun and belly satisfying experience.
We lived in Savannah in the late 50's and had friends that lived across the street. We have been visiting Savannah for several years and always have lunch at Mrs. Wilkes. Excellent food. It's a MUST when in Savannah. The only problem is that on some occasions we are not able to get there by Friday noon and that's a real disappointment since they're closed evenings and weekends.
you go to Mrs. Wilkes. I was on my own while my fiance' was working during the day on my visit to Savannah. I stumbled across Mrs. Wilkes. The most wonderful experience of my trip. The food, the atmosphere, sitting with complete strangers and walking away with a new set of friends....and yes, you do have to take your own dishes to the kitchen. A MUST for all travlers!!! :)
My mom, a friend, and I all had the pleasure of dining in Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room on Wed., Sept. 22, 2004. We had 3 wonderful couples traveling from Florida at out table dining with us. The meal was totally awesome. We had so many different dishes passing around the table...too many to mention. It was all delicious. I highly recommend this to all. We didn't even have to wait in line at all and it was well worth the money spent.
Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room is a step back in time. The family style service is especially fun if you have the pleasure of sharing it with people you do not know. Whether you have adventurous taste buds or not, no one walks away hungry and there is no such thing as a stranger when you finish your meal! PS- Don't forget her cookbook! It will be the best souvenir, I promise!
To get a good taste of what historic Savannah, Ga., make sure you stop by Mrs. Wilkes' Dining House. It is true Southern tradition right down to saying grace and clearin' your own plate. The food is served in a family style setting, with fried chicken, to barbecue ribs to cornbread to sweet ice tea. It doesn't get any better than this. Pencil in an extra thirty minutes for the line but, boy, is it worth it.
