Centennial Olympic Park
This park, created for the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta, has 21 acres (8.5 hectares) of green space, rock gardens and artwork. The nearly 500,000 commemorative bricks that make up its main walkway were part of fund raising efforts for the Games. During scorching Atlanta summers, children frolic in the ground-level Olympic Rings, which periodically shoot streaming arcs of water in time to the seven light and music concerts put on throughout the day. Flags honoring the nations that have played host to the Olympics in the past surround the fountain.
Love the location! Many historic, tourist attractions, sporting events and great eateries are within blocks or facing the park.
Felt sense of comfort with law enforcement always within eye view it shows that the city is there to serve. This is not a negative comment. I've been to other cities and ambassadors or other type of representatives are few and far between. I know if I need something Atlanta's finest is always willing to help out or give me some direction.
The park was off the beaten track and basically deserted the day I was there. In fact, I was the only visitor. I was expecting some historic retrospect of the Olympics in general or even just the Atlantic Olympics and didn't find it. I felt stranded--there was no food or beverage concession either. Atlanta needs to add some fun attractions to make this a worthwhile tourist draw. Suggestions: a kiddie playground, expand the fountain displays, a phyiscal fitness center, etc.
Very nice to see at night. The water lights up and it can be very breath taking. Would be very nice to see as a couple and taking a romantic walk or even if family and friends want to take a scroll and chill out. Well worth the trip and it's free!
