Just 15 minutes north of Buckhead, this is one of Atlanta's most attractive and accessible public courses. Players choose between the fast-playing nine-hole par-3 course and the par-70, 18-hole championship course. Beautifully landscaped with bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways, this 951-yard (869.5-meter) challenge presents a variety of hazards. Facilities include a driving range, practice facility, clubhouse and a pro shop that offers individual and group lessons.
I've only played there 3 times, so consider that my comments may change with more play. It is a fair test of golf from the back tees. You need to play smart as some of the holes penalize you for length (#'s 6,7,9,10,11) or tempt you to make unwise club selections (10,17). Driving accuracy on some holes is necessary or the consequences dire. It is a great course to walk (the course provides pull-carts) since only the 1st, 8,9,10, and 18 invlove hills. I recently played twilight (after 1:00 in winter) for $49.00 - a pretty good deal. The staff and marshalls are friendly. The course features real turf and a free bucket of range balls with greens fees. It also has a par 3 course, which I did not play. I'll play there again.
If you're looking for a well kept course with a nice variety of holes, it's hard to go wrong at River Pines. Very long hitters may not think much of it. But the condition of this course is really very nice and the green fees are reasonable by local standards. Overall value for the middle handicapper can't be beat. It's also one of the very few courses in the North Atlanta area that is walkable, so do consider taking advantage of that rare opportunity in Atlanta to play the game as it was meant to be played (my editorial opinion). Practice range is nice and included in green fee. Chipping not allowed on practice green (didn't help my game). The club house restaurant is limited to casual fare, so don't plan on a full sit-down meal afterward if that's your thing.
Enjoy. I'll be back.
