Located a few doors from the historic Fox Theatre , this funky club is a great post-theater hangout, as well as a fine place to enjoy a mellow evening of jazz. Gritty and authentic all the way, comfortable chairs and cabaret-style seating contribute to a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy some great music. Full bar service is available, including a great assortment of high quality liqueurs and perhaps the best coffee in Midtown. Churchill Grounds is also home to the best martini, as proclaimed by the local magazine.
The concierge at the hotel told me about Churchill Grounds when I asked for a break from the conference I was attending. Intimate venue. I was able to have a good conversation with the band at break and stayed for a second set. I liked the coffee. also enjoyed a good choice of cigars. I've made three trips to Atlanta since then and always include this club on my agenda.
On Nov 3, 2004, around 8:00 pm I dropped by Churchill Grounds and requested a double espresso. Extremely bitter with no crema ... absolulely the worse espresso I've ever had ... After a couple of sips I asked for the bill ... and was very surprised at the price $4.50.
In Paris, double espressos at most caffe bars go for only 1.00 Euro ... and they are incredible. In Atlanta, the best espressos are at Java Vino, across from Manuel's Tavern on North Highlands and double espressos there are $1.62. Java Vino roasts their own coffee beans every Monday .... so you know it is fresh.
The manager at Churchill Grounds did tell me that they use a blend from Torrefazione Italia, which is roasted in Italy. Torrefazione has no real control over how long a retail store holds its beans before being used.
The unusual journalism motif suits itself well to the outgoing crowd that packs this Midtown club most nights. The martinis
and the beer choices are second to none, and the Cajun fare gets high marks from local papers and ...
