An oasis in downtown Miami
By Jana, 11/6/07
First of all, let me tell you that I chair the committee that has been restoring it for the past nine years, the City Cemetery Restoration Committee of Dade Heritage Trust. We secured a new fence, lighting and have planted more than 200 lovely flowering and native trees. Our committee has maintained these trees with volunteers fertilizing and mulching twice a year. We've also planted bushes to attract butterflies. One of our committee members has repaired more than sixty markers, where no family members were left to take care of them. There are nearly 500 trees in the cemetery and it is said a few of them were planted by Dr. David Fairchild. It is the final resting place of nearly all of Miami's pioneers; Julia Tuttle, The Peacock family, the Sewells, Dr. Jackson, Father Gibson and on and on. Stop by and see this botanical garden right in downtown.
