Vizcaya...a different Deering Estate
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/21/06
The Deering Estate at Cutler is a jewel from a bygone era. With historic buildings dating from 1896 - 1922, archaeological resources marking Tequesta and Paleo-Indian habitation, and more than 450 acres of diverse native plant communities, the DEC offers visitors a rare glimpse into Miami's past (Yes, Miami has a past!). Sitting under the royal palms beside the sparkling waters of Biscayne Bay, it's not difficult to see why Charles Deering chose this spot to spend the final years of his life.
The Deering Estate at Cutler and Vizcaya are seperate residences built by different members of the Deering family. Vizcaya, built by Charles' younger half-brother, James Deering, is a palacial Italian Renaissance style villa featuring manacured gardens and four centuries of antiques.
Both Charles Deering's sedately beautiful Cutler home and James Deering's impressive Guilded Age mansion are worth a visit!
