Deering Estate

Description

From the Tequesta Indians to the pioneers of the 1890s to Deering himself, this area of Cutler was a prime location for settlement. Just off of Biscayne Bay, this unique natural setting is home to many rare plants, tropical hammocks and endangered land forests. Today, you can tour the historic Stone House and the Richmond Cottage or explore the areas at the Environmental Center museum.

Deering Estate and Vizcaya. Both amazing.
By ,
Separate properties belonging to two wealthy brothers, the Deering Estate at Cutler and Vizcaya are among my favorite places to visit in Miami. Vizcaya, near Key Biscayne, is a palatial museum still furnished with an impressive collection of antiques and artwork. The Deering Estate at Cutler, located in the Village of Palmetto Bay, is intimate and serene with few furnishings but lots of history and natural beauty. Love them both.

LOVE IT!
By ,
I first became acquainted with Vizcaya while enjoying my tropical honeymoon back in 1969. It was so gorgeous, inside and out. The architecture, the furnishings, the gardens - absolutely beautiful! Have been back many times since. I highly recommend it as one of Miami's precious jewels! And if you happen to be in town during the Renaissance Festival, make it a point to visit. You will love it!

Great place to visit
By ,
I just came from the villa and it was the most amazing house i've ever seen. I took the tour and learning about its history added to the experience. I spent about three hours walking around. This is a great place to take the family or have a wedding.

Deering Estate wowed me!
By ,
This was a great little escape from the city during our stay. The grouds were beautiful so very Florida and I felt really happy that I spent my time here. I also used our Go Miami Card to get free admission onto the grounds which was really nice.

I try to visit everytime I go to Florida
By ,
I first visited Viscaya in 1970 or so and I try to visit this palatial estate each and every time I go to Florida. To roam through the various and plentiful rooms is to go back in time and just imagine the gay, fun filled times that were had there. Mr. Deering sure had the right idea of "living large".

Vizcaya...a different Deering Estate
By ,
The Deering Estate at Cutler is a jewel from a bygone era. With historic buildings dating from 1896 - 1922, archaeological resources marking Tequesta and Paleo-Indian habitation, and more than 450 acres of diverse native plant communities, the DEC offers visitors a rare glimpse into Miami's past (Yes, Miami has a past!). Sitting under the royal palms beside the sparkling waters of Biscayne Bay, it's not difficult to see why Charles Deering chose this spot to spend the final years of his life. The Deering Estate at Cutler and Vizcaya are seperate residences built by different members of the Deering family. Vizcaya, built by Charles' younger half-brother, James Deering, is a palacial Italian Renaissance style villa featuring manacured gardens and four centuries of antiques. Both Charles Deering's sedately beautiful Cutler home and James Deering's impressive Guilded Age mansion are worth a visit!

Steering my way to Deering Estate
By ,
I really liked the view and landscaping. This is a picture friendly place and it is quiet and relaxing. The tour was very informative and educational. The estate grounds were fascinating and the home is very historical.

A little side trip
By ,
My mom , brother and I visited the Viscaya (Deering) estate. It's quite a lovely place to visit. There is a guided tour at the main house. The house is very ornate and interesting. The fountains are very impressive. The grounds are nice but I felt could have been better cared for. There are quite a few shady places to sit and chat. There is also a gift shop and a cafe.Look out for the large blue land crabs that make the grounds of Viscaya home.Make sure you go down to the waterfront for a great view of Key Biscayne... check out the romantic gazebo too.

Romantic, intersting, and entertaining yearout!
By ,
Also known as Viscaya, the Deering Estate hosts the annual Dade County Renaissance Festival, which is intriguing and entertaining for the entire family. Other times of the year, it is admired as a cultural and romantic setting, with tours of the estate, and freedom to wonder the gardens and waterfront. Weddings and special engagements are perfectly suited and frequently held on the property. One could never tire of the beauty and interest of Deering Estate.

Deering Estate and Richmond Cottage Rare Jewels
By ,
Before there were roads in Dade County, the Richmond Cottage was one of the very few places for travelers to rest. Later, when the Ingraham Highway (now named Old Cutler Road) was blazed from a foot path through the area, Charles Deering build a magnificent stone home overlooking Biscayne Bay on this majestic location. Now operated as a county park, the area is rich with archeological treasures left by indigenous Tequesta Indians. This is simply one of the most beautiful places in South Florida, still faithfully remniscent of a by-gone era.
