Discovery Cruise Line
Experience the fun of a tropical island and a carefree ocean cruise all in one day. The tour starts with breakfast in the spacious dining room. Guests can enjoy a game of bingo in the lounge, play games on deck, or simply relax in the sun. The ship docks at Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island, around 1pm. Same-day guests are first off the ship and have approximately four hours to explore the island. The ship has a casino, lounges, a snack bar, pool, and shopping. Two-and three-day cruises are also available. Departs Port Everglades at 7:45a, Departs Grand Bahamas at 4:45p, returns at 10p.
Save your money and go to Nasauu. Was horrible! The wait going onto ship ;and getting off is horrendous., The ship is old, pool very small, it was dirty and they kept playing same music over and over. Grand Bahama Island is NOT worth seeing...very poor there and the beaches inh Florida are better or just as nice. I wish i didn't spend 119.00 and then another 35.00 for tour to beach and 15.00 for parking at the port. You will be sorry!
DO NOT waste your money going on this day "cruise."
-Fast check in process but we were told we didn't have tickets after we had already paid.
-They make you book and extra "trip" once you get to the island. That "not 1 penny more" advertisement is FALSE. They make you pay up to $30 for a trip to go on once you get off the dock in Bahamas.
-Sugar filled drinks, flat soda, GROSS food.
-Old boat- 70s era decorations.
-Staff never seemed friendly/happy although they were attentive.
-In bar area music was WAY to loud. I'm 21 and the music was loud and DJ kept playing same songs over and over.
-Old boat with nasty chairs in all areas (deck, lounges, casino)
-Pretty much all games were broken in the game room and was a $10 deposit to play the Wii.
-Only 1 pool and it was tiny. Max 12 people.
-Docking and dembarkation is forever and they make you wait in a hot room with no A/C. Once back to U.S. They make you wait in another room and it is freezing. They don't tell anyone what is going on until the doors open and people flood out. Only certain people were aloud out at that time. People started yelling at the staff and were very upset.
-Don't waste your time, money, or energy on this. SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR SOMETHING GOOD.
I am back from my day cruise on The Discovery Sun last night. This ship looks exactly like the ship used in the LOVE BOAT tv series! Here is my take on it. Good and bad.
Maybe that ship was the the hottest thing back in 1977, but it 2010, its was like walking back in time. And it showed. From the high school cafeteria food to the old airline seats in the theater room. From the clearly outdated amenities, to the 70 dollar/day price ( port charges included ) They really should dock this old ship and breath new life into it. And finally it had the worst cabin I have seen on a cruise ship and not enough time at port.
If you are feeling nostalgic, maybe it will be ok. For a one day thing its ok I guess. They offer FREE booze. Bottom shelf of course. Even with the small tip, still a good deal. For an old ship they seem to keep it well lubed and greased up.( Visible gears I could see and life boats.)
The service was surprisingly good. The dining room attendants were very pleasant. The entertainment tried very hard to please everyone I felt.
Neither good or bad..
Parking at port 15 dollars per day
Time to get on ship 25 minutes
Time to get off ship about 50 minutes
My advice...While I would go again if I had to get to the Bahamas on a budget as its was more ferry like than fun cruise, I would stick to larger cruise lines if I expected more.
My wifes Bday and we booked the cruise. We lined up for over an hour to board. We get to the counter and present our passports. I have a Canadian passport and my wife is American. Because my address is in the USA I am told I need a green card. Well, I give them my green card and it has expired and explain that the new one has not yet arrived. I am then told that I am being denied boarding. Aparently a valid passport is not good enough. If I had lied and told this stupid woman I was visiting, there would not have been an issue. We come home dissapointed since my wifes Bday had just been ruined by this idiot and call Discovery to get refunded. After explaining what happened Discovery tells us we will be charged $50 because we did not go.
How very nice of them to ruin a birthday and take $50 for a trip that never happened.
We have been on this trip before and NEVER will I book with them again. Cash grabbing, uneducated staff with NO customer service skills. In my obviously wrong opinion, a valid passport should be accepted, an offer to reschedule the trip would have been nice but no offer was made.
So nice to get a "Thanks for your $50 Have a Nice Day"
Cabins are old and comforters/sofas are dirty (science projects really). Mold in the bathrooms. Staff is nice enough but always always looking for tips (even have an engraved metal stand on dining tables with "suggested tip" amount per person per meal - and it is buffet - help yourself: basically tip is to bus your table). And if you ask for soda at the meal - it is extra with tip already added when you get the bill which has to be paid then and there (even bottle water on table was additional charge) - my kids would not drink the flat horrible not COKE or PEPSI soda either - so that was the tip money. Food is horrible. My husband almost got sick on the breakfast hashbrowns. Did not eat any of the dinner. Boat is very old - and it shows. Rugs are dirty thru out. Pool was closed on way back but would not let my kids in it anyway. Duty free is good -and prices are good. Cruise just not something I would EVER recommend to someone - I wished I had seen a review like this and would have reconsidered my trip. The hotel (as we did a package) was nice but the chains had changed hands and no one called to inform us it moved from the Westin Chain to Radisson. Problem with the name change is that the cab ride was a bit of a confusing mess after 7 hours on the boat. But we got there. Hotel was clean, staff was AWESOME, beach was clean, but it was eerily empty. Never saw another person with a suitcase going up or down the elevators ONCE in 3 days. Breakfast buffet - highly recommended (pricey ($22 each) but very very good). Overall we had a good trip - but the boat ride was one we could have all done without. And the cabin is NOT suitable for more than 4 - it says 6 - but 2 will be standing for the 7 hours...and you better love each other ALOT! Our family time was challenging by the 5th hour!! Avoid the Discovery SUN to the Bahamas...take a flight!
First and foremost, I was expecting the worse the day we arrived for our Girls Cruise to the Bahamas.....I also expected to walk on the Ship to smell the odor everyone here mentioned....well that was not the case. I took this cruise with 9 friends and yes, the Ship is not new BUT the staff was excellent in keeping guests entertained. As soon as we got on the Ship they took us to our cabin (which by the way wasn't as bad as I expected, OLD; YES!) of course it was small but came in handy when we wanted alittle privacy. Any ways, they took us to breakfast after putting our things away and again, I expected the worse..it was very much eatable food. After breakfast we exlpored the Ship and went to the top deck to sunbath...there were no weird people, so we felt completely safe.I would strongly suggest to get an excursion package on the Ship which includes: transportation to the Island, a private Beach & Resort access, and some shopping for $30. You only have about 3 1/2 to 4 hours at the Bahamas for a 1 day trip! On the way back, the entertainment was enough to get us through the 5 hours and dinner was good (not like some mentioned).....the only part of the entire trip which was not fun was the waiting time to exit the Ship but understanable......If I could do the trip again, I surely would but this time for an overnight stay at the Bahamas.... This was my first Cruise and the experience was better than expected; it was definitely worth our time and money.....Thank you Discovery Cruise Staff!!
I bought this fun day cruise for myself and my boyfriend for Valentines day. The night before he decided to google the 'Discovery Sun' for reviews and we found this site. The terrible reviews really scared me, but it was paid for and we went. I was expecting the worst and it turned out to be a great little trip. Check-in in process was really simple. When we first got on the boat, yes, it doesn't smell the best. It is definitely an older boat, but it I htought it was well maintained. The smell wasn't unbearable just a little sea smelling I guess? I did not get us a room because I didn't think it woudl be necessary. At first I wishe dthat I had booked a room because it was so early in the morning and I was exhausted. We went and ate breakfast after walking around the ship for a half hour. I paid for the upgraded meal so we were waited on. We were literally the only people eating in the dining room. We had about five different gentlemen pouring us drinks ans serving us food. The bacon was excellent, french toast and pancakes were 'Eh', but edible and they make the plates very presentable- A for effort. Small portion, but enough to be full. Tips for breakfast $5, Dinner we left $8. After breakfast I went by the pool which was closed, I brought a few towels and a sweatshirt, wrapped myself up and took a nap for a few hours very comfortably in the pool chair. When I woke up I noticed that the pool was open and filled -it was salt water that fill and drain while cruising. The drinks were very reasonable and delicous. When we got to the Bahamas we had no idea what was going on, but everyone was getting into van taxis. Some of them were older, some newer, but I didn't feel as if my life was in danger like the crazy lady who wrote the review below me. He gave us a tour like trip to the town Lucaya. It was beautiful, gorgeous beach and I didn't want to leave. When I got back on the boat I tok another nap by the pool, woke up and ate our upgraded dinner. The dinner was excellent. I had french onion soup, served with different breads, seafood with lobster, shrimp and scallops, an OK caesar salad, delicous prosciutto and melon, excellent calamari, my boyfriend got incredible filet mignon and we were FULL after. The dessert was pretty bad though- looked good, but def. wasn't. I was too full to care though. We didn;t eat any lunch- I was too full from all the drinks. I noticed a Dominos and Quiznos on the Island if chicken fingers, burgers and ice cream doesn't do it for you on the ship. This was a glorified ferry. The staff was really friendly. It was so cheap and well worth it. I had a great day off and cam ehome iwth lots of duty free liqour. Next time I get a day off I would def. do that again.
Even after I read all the bad reviews I decided to go on this trip with my family. Let me first say this is not a cruise ship in my opinion, this is a very old boat. We read a few reviews that said if you were with a fun group of people that you would have a good time and since we had already purchased our tickets we all agreed to go. Well I couldn't disagree more based on our experience. There were 6 adults and my 3 1/2 year old son. I thought he and I would have a great time swimming and playing in the arcade while the adults went and participated in the “mature" activities. Well the pool is a large kiddy pool that could only fit 12 people at best and it ended up being to cold to swim, all the games in the arcade were broken
(yes, every game). I also brought our portable DVD player and plenty of actvity books, go fish, stickers, etc to keep him busy. The problem was there were no quite, clean well lite places for him to sit down and relax. The website said there were designated smoking areas, well that was not true. People were smoking every where but the starlight lounge and the arcade. My son has asthma and has been on treatments for the last three days do to that boat trip. The starlight lounge is dirty and they have bench seats with bars to separate the individual cushions so it is hard to get in a comfy position to relax; these are the “airplane seats” from another review. All the rooms on the boat were booked so we had nowhere to rest, it was awful. When we arrived to the island we were forced to take a cab, there is nothing around you and you can't stay on the boat. Well we were pushed into a cab that had no brakes and we got into a wreck about 5 mins down the road. Yes, you read right…. a car accident and 6 out of 10 of us were injured. Thank God my son was not one of them. Then we were forced into a new cab that drove us to a casino to get our free “Bahamas Mama”
(Which was not where we wanted to go) on the way our new cab driver told us how the cab drivers never fix their brakes around their and accidents were a common occurrence. The second cab driver called the cops when we refused to pay the fare due to the wreck, he wanted $50.00. The police arrived at the casino when we explained about the accident and how we were forced into this cab he told us if we refused to go to the hospital there was nothing they could do, he didn't make a report and left. Well we then demanded the second cab driver take us back to port, out of fear we would be left on this “island". That cab the " Limo" sounded like the transmission was about to fallout. When we returned to port we had them call the police again and make out a report. That officer had also been at the accident scene and told us our driver had no insurance. We got back on the boat and just prayed we would make it home. By evening the whole ship stunk of smoke and my son couldn't breathe. We tried to sit outside on the front of the boat but they had no light out there and we were freezing. The back was full of drinkers and partiers not appropriate for my son to see. We ported at 10 and were forced to sit in the hall until 11:00 before the let us off.
If you like nursing home food then the meals weren't bad, drinks were $6.00 and up, bingo is about $2.00 a ticket and your tip for the buffet servers are about $2.00 at breakfast and $3.50 at dinner. You can purchase lunch burgers, hot dog, fingers, pizza that ranges from $4- $6.00. Lockers are $5.00 each. Cab ride, if you dare, is $5.00 each way per person. The bathrooms are old and dingy but not filthy. There is nowhere to change unless you have a room. The staff was very nice. We didn't discuss our accident with them. I have left a message with CS but I am sure they will do nothing about it.
This was the most disgusting, dirty, foul smelling, run down ship I have ever seen. Nothing has been updated in at least 40 years. There was nothing to do except sit on a dirty chair for 8 hours basking in the sun just waiting to get to the Bahamas. The pool was only half full the whole time, of disgusting salt water of course and any other activities that were advertised on the ship were never even available . We tried to go to the casino twice but it was always closed. The bathrooms or 'locker rooms' were filthy, I felt more dirty for having even gone there. It was mistake wearing white shorts because off the black sut from the smoke stack on the top of ship. My clothes were brown by the time I got off the ship and they didn't even offer towels to sit on. It took nearly two hours to get off the ship because of poor communication and organization. They played the same 5 songs over and over again, I thought my ears were going to burst. This was definatly the worst experience on a cruise ship I have ever had and will not ever do it again, even if was FREE! I will highly discourage anyone who may want to take this as part of their vacation in the near future.
I took my boyfriend for his 30th birthday on a trip to South Florida and in looking for ideas of things to do I stumbled across the Discovery one day cruise. The check- in was very simple especially since we printed our forms off their web site. The actual cabin we stayed in was extremely small. It states it holds four but the size of the bed is a twin. Although the room was small and not exactly what I was expecting I would recommend that if you are doing the the one day thing that u get a room b/c there are times when when we became restless and we were grateful for a private place to relax some. It also gives u an opportunity to lock your things up and not having to lug them all over the boat. If you are staying in the Bahamas for an extended vacation then the cabin might not be as vital since you are only riding one way on different days. The staff were nice and friendly. I found them all to be helpful. I actually won Bingo once which was a cash prize so that was cool! Bingo cost a small fee ie $1-2 depending on the game... They had karokee contest, beer drinking contest all of which was free to enter to with prizes. The food was not up to my standards however. It is all buffet style. Breakfast was actually good. Lunch and dinner were awful for me. I am a Southern girl used to good slow cooked food-- so I may be a little bias....I have a hard time finding good food when I travel, however my boyfriend liked the food much better than I did. Some things to know: do not take food or drink on the boat (they dont allow it), it takes a long time to get off when u return to Florida, they have activities for kids and a room where they can hang out in, only water (tap) and tea are free, and overall it is was a nice trip especially for the price...and I encourage any one to take it....and explore the ship....keep up with the activity schedule and play Bingo-u might win.....If I am ever again in the South Florida area I would take this trip again...but next time I would opt to stay in the Bahamas for a couple nights..if you never been & u take the one day--those several hours are just a tease.....
