Key West Aquarium
Opened in 1934, this educational and entertaining aquarium features diverse exhibits on sea life in the area and live demonstrations. Wander among the many varieties of marine life or take a guided tour. One of the major attractions of the aquarium includes daily feedings of shark and fish. Children usually enjoy the touching area, where visitors can touch marine creatures in shallow pools.
I've been to the aquarium on every trip to Key West. It's a great place to learn about local fish and reptiles. My husband and I have recently become SCUBA divers and it's neat to see the fish you just swam with close up! The huge grouper is great, he's very friendly and it feels like he recognizes us each time. There's also a Bull Shark in the outside area that is beautiful and makes you realize how massive these guys are. It's a great learning experience.
FYI...the outside shark tank was filled with dirt and debris after the most recent hurricane, it's all been restored, but I saw it when it wasn't. It's great to see that they've recovered. Like much of Key West, this structure can survive nearly anything.
did not see a big grouper or a tank that a big grouper can fit in. some of the fish were interesting. the turtles looked like they were not going to make it much longer. would not recommend visiting in the summer because there is no ac
the aquarium was small, but interesting. they had many tropical fish and sharks in indoor and outdoor tanks. they have tours/feedings several times a day. try to get in on a tour/feeding.
the interactive tank is neat. pulling sea creatures out of the water can be an experience. watch for the biting animal sign on some displays.
the building is not air conditioned, so be prepared to sweat and bring along water. there is a conch fritter stand just outside the front doors. i found this to be interesting as the conchs are on display at the aquarium, but you can eat them outside.
While this is a very small aquarium, it's wonderful! As soon as you enter, you see the Touch Tank. Kids will love putting their hands in to pull out all sorts of creatures - starfish, sea cucumbers, horseshoe crabs, etc. Make sure you go around the times when they're feeding the sharks - it's great to watch. You can also pet a baby shark too before they do the feeding. It's definitely fun to do in Key West!
