This strip of sand is one of the best-known beaches in Key West. Named after a former governor, it is just west of the airport and, at two miles long, it is the island's longest strip of silica. This beach is an excellent choice if you have children. With plenty of parking, restrooms, concession stands, chair rentals, picnic tables, watersport rentals and more, everything you need to have a great day in the sun is right at hand. The beach was hit hard by a hurricane in 1998, but it has recovered well and is flourishing once again.
I come from New Jersey & I can say that although the water is alot clearer in Smathers beach, the combination of seaweed, lack of waves & prescence of the homeless make this a bad experience. I'd rather hit a beach here.
I remember going to Key West around 10 years ago as a teenager, and Smathers beach was awesome. There were people everywhere, swimming, playing volleyball, there was a tiki bar right in the middle of the water with stools, the water was crystal clear, the sand was soft, it was amazing.
So ten years later, I took my fiance and wanted to relive those memories. The Island is still a blast, it was the most fun she ever had, we stayed at the Casa Marina, which has it's own private beach, but it was rocky and had seaweed. So I remembered Smathers beach and we went there.....it was deserted, the sand was concrete hard, the beautiful water was infested with seaweed, you couldn't swim.
I just came on here to ask...what happened to that wonderful beach? And I find out it was nearly destroyed in 1998, around the time before I went. It's very sad to see that what was once a tropical paradise has been ruined. It seems that the parks and rec. department don't really take care of this place, why, I don't know. Has there a law been passed that they cannot clean and comb the water? I'm paying over 250 bucks a night at a resort, and even they didn't have the clean beach I was expecting. WTH is going on?
My family went to Key West for my sisters wedding. unfortunatly Smathers beach smelled awful. the wind was blowing the other way during the wedding at the beach thank God! We tried to go swimming at Smathers the next day but it smelled so bad we were all dry heaving. we walked about 1 mile south to Higgs beach and it did not smell as bad. After my boyfriends son played in the ocean for awhile we returned to the hotel pool to relax and enjoy the sun. Don't go to Key West for the great beaches that's for sure. But overall our trip to the Key's, minus the beach was awesome!
I used to work for Sunset Watersports in Key West on ----- Smathers Beach. Most of the time the beach was raked clean by the city early in the mornings. I met soooo many different people there it was funny. People from all over the World. Rich, Poor, Homeless, all seem to wash up on the shores of Key West (I was from Wisconsin). I was a windsurfing/ sailing instructor on Smathers Beach so I spent a good deal of time there and I really enjoyed it. There were clean restrooms and showers right there on the beach nested in a tropical oasis type setting. The sand was white and the people were tan.
Oh, and if you don't want to see Homeless people near you when you vacation, you probably shouldn't go to public places, because they're just about everywhere. Here's a travelers tip: If you're going to the beach, stop somewhere before you get to the beach and put your valuables in the trunk. This way your wallet/purse aren't sitting on the sand while you're in the water! Be sure to lock your car when you get there too, incase there is a switch in the glove box to open the trunk! Most bums I've seen would only steal something EASY to take thats why they're BUMS! Oh, and if you're going there to party, check out Duvall Street at night, thats where the bars and tourist shops are.
