Shula's On the Beach
Former Miami Dolphins' football coach, Don Shula, created this restaurant. It rapidly became a mainstay of an upscale crowd. Dine with a view, both indoors and outside on a covered patio. Wall-sized televisions showing football games are the least attractive thing about this white tablecloth dining spot that focuses on steaks. Do not expect to find a cheap meal here, but do expect to be treated with care and served premium beef, which is far and away the favorite selection. Make reservations if you want to snag one of the tables with an ocean view.
We have dined at Shulas on Fort Lauderdale Beach about a dozen times, and have never been disappointed. (Only once did we have a rude waiter).
The steaks are touchdowns, desserts great and the ambiance is good. If you have a chance to eat on the terrace during the cooler months in SoFla I recommend it.
Good value for the cost.
PS: The Christmas Buffet Is Outstanding!
On a recent vacation we had dinner at this fine establishment. Our waiter was pleasant, although he seemed a bit irritated that there were not more customers for a Sunday night. We made reservations for an outside table, however when we arrived, the hostess informed us that it looked like rain, and the only table available was not covered. We decided to take a table inside, and received one near the window where our view of the Atlantic Ocean was unobstructed. The food was exceptional, my Ribeye was cooked perfectly "blue rare" just like I requested. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer, and it was perfect. The sauces were full of flavor and perfectly complimentary to the calamari. The side dish was great, and the hot bread was superb. If we are ever in Fort Lauderdale, Shula's will definitely be on our short list of places to eat.
If you are looking to dine at a pricey steak joint ($36 - $40 per entree), choose either a Ruth's Chris or a Morton's instead.
My wife and I have been going to Ft. Lauderdale once a year on business for the past 6 or 7 years and finally gave in to the barrage of advertising for Shula's. The result was disappointing.
The first thing one notices when one enters the restaurant (which is in a Sheraton) is that what dominates the typical dark wood clubby atmosphere of the high-end steak restaurant are two giant screen TVs that occupy a central wall. Although the sound was off, the TVs are visible all over the restaurant, reflect off the glass windows once it is dark outside, and create the atmosphere of a sports club.
I ordered a martini off the restaurant's special martini menu (no prices listed, of course) and ended up paying $14.75 for a mediocre martini. My wife ordered the $14 shrimp cocktail and received four slightly overcooked and mushy shrimp on a plain white plate. No garnish -- just stark.
My wife also ordered a glass of wine and, although the wine was fine, the glass smelled distinctly like detergent -- not what one wants with an expensive glass of wine!
Our steaks were fine -- not as good as Ruth's Chris's or Morton's -- but fine. Take note however -- the menu leads you to believe that you will receive only a steak. The plate actually comes with some mixed peppers, button mushrooms, and what seemed to be watercress. You could probably skip the $7 baked potato.
Overall, neither the food nor the service is as good as the other high-end steak places. Skip this one and try Johnny V's on Las Olas instead. It costs less and is better all around.
We loved Shula's on the Beach. Excellent service and setting. We sat outside and enjoyed the food and spirit of the beach traffic. Will be coming back to town for cruise and will have dinner here the night before we sail.
Being a customer of Shula's for years,I know what to expect, perfection. However, latley, service in particular has been slipping.New manager or owner? Don't know? But for the prices they charge,
they had better clean up there act.
We have been returning to Shula's every year for the past 6 years. Once again we will have our Christmas feast there.
Outstanding Steaks always cooked just right, and a good selection of vegetables to choose from. The outside seating area is great when it is not windy, the views of the ocean are soothing.
The Christmas meal with buffet is our favorite. Large succulent shrimp, fresh greens, great soup plus our regular meal of steak, plus delicious desserts. The sevice has always been top shelf while the pricing is very competitve. We highly recommend this restaurant.
My husband and I have been to Shula's on the beach many times for special occassions. We have taken our family, our friends and celebrated special times there. We have always loved the atmosphere and felt that it was worth the price.
Last Saturday, August 26th, my husband suprised me and booked a room at the beach to celebrate our 31st anniversary. As we sat at the beach and brainstormed dinner plans we decided to do Shulas.
At 8:00 we ordered two steaks and a glass of wine. By 8:30 we started looking for someone to ask if they would be out soon. At 8:45 our waitress announced our steaks would be out momentarily. By 9:00 we asked was something wrong with our dinners? Our waitress got the manager who apologized our steaks were overdone and they didn't want to serve them so new ones were cooking.
At 9:30 our steaks were delivered-looked good but after one bite, mine was ice cold. I could not get anyones attention to take it back and warm it a little.
My husband is still furious and telling everyone he knows! I begged him to forget it as it was such a special nite. He said at least they could have acted a little sorry and offered us a desert or drink!
As an ex football player and coach, he feels bad that Mr. Shula has his name attached to that kind of service and attitude. I truly regret that I will NEVER get him back there.
We were not just some "tourists" but special customers who use to rave about the food and atmosphere. The manager should know and certainly go out of his way to make people feel valued!
I ate at Don Shula's in Ft. Lauderdale last May. I invited a friend. The food was outstanding. I eat out all the time, so I have an idea of what to expect from a restaurant. But this place was exceptional. Mind you, the dinner for two cost over $200, but it was worth every penny, and I do not regret it at all. Outstanding place, view, service, and food. What more can one ask for in a restaurant?
