National Zoological Park
The National Zoo is one of the nation's finest zoos. It was created by Congress in 1889 and designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed the grounds of the U.S. Capitol and New York's Central Park. The zoo is famous for its giant pandas from China but you will find all sorts of creatures, both familiar and exotic, crawling about the place.
We followed all the zoo's suggestions the main one of getting to the zoo early. What a waste. We arrived at the zoo at 8am and there we no animals to view and the visitor center wasn't even open. We walked around for 2 hours trying to find an animal for our daughter to look at. We knew the buildings didn't open until 10am but the website claimed the outdoor animals would be out..... They were not. Even after 10am we couldn't find any animals. We were starting to wonder if the zoo even had animals. We will never waster our time going back as we stayed until 1pm and only saw a few animals. As the title says - A WASTE OF TIME...........
Again like many of the other complaints the only redeeming quality was the "free" part of the price tag. Still alot of closed exhibits and construction with a few animal sightings mixed in on the down hill walk ways. If you have a local zoo in your area dont waste your time making a special trip here.... your local zoo is most likely on this level if not better. Even the richmond zoo has giraffes and a buffalo when compared to what is called our "national zoo". Definitely in need of an obama bailout or stimulus package.
While the San Diego Zoo may be a bit more classy, the national zoo has nothing to be ashamed of. A great collection of wildlife from around the world. Try to visit when the weather is a bit cooler. In the dead heat of summer, many of the animals tend to be lethargic and stay in their houses.
