Lying astride a beautiful section of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this large park features over 500 miles of hiking trails and it offers a wide array of recreational activities such as camping, backpacking, biking, fishing, climbing, horseback riding, and nature walks. Interpretive programs are also available.
get away from people and the city. deer everywhere 2 ten point bucks 4 eight points a bunch of six point and spikes, 1 pibold doe,9 black bears,1 bobcat,1 snow white squirrel, lots of chipmonks and the view of the valley. I visit 3 or 4 times each year never lets me down
Unless you like to drive and hike, a lot, don't bother going. I was expecting to see waterfalls close to the road, but no all the waterfalls were a long long hike and the hikes were very hard. The overlooks were just about all the same. It was a waste of $15 and I'll never go back.
Shenandoah is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I began going when I was 5 years old and now at 30 am anxiously awaiting my next trip in a few days. Being young, we do not have alot to spend on lodging so we tent camp and have yet to be disappointed with the campgrounds or rangers. Everyone I have spoken to is happy to be there. Also the rangers are VERY knowledgeable and the staff at the stores and visitor centers and willing to help in any way. The only unpleasant person I have run across was when I inquired about the Skyland Lodge for our upcoming trip. (I was considering trying the lodge for a couple nights.) For what ever reason the reservationist that I cooresponed with (via email) was unhelpful and very rude so I don't know if we will ever stay in one of the lodges. But the upside is that her un-cooperation has reduced our lodging costs so much that we are planning a 2nd trip this year. Something we haven't been able to do in the past. So I guess I really should thank her. Anyhow, Shenandoah is wonderful. Anyone intrested in hiking, photography or just meeting some new people would enjoy a visit to Shenandoah.
Breath Taking.... Stay at the SkyLand Resort the highest peak.. Bring your puppies Dogs... They are Welcome to. WHich is very important. Sit on top of the mountain get in touch with real life and enjoy... I can not tell you the beauty of this area. Look out over Luray from the top of a mountain. Wake up to birds singing and people smiling... The employees are so nice and friendly. Can not wait to go back..... I already have reservations!
If you're visiting Va of D.C. stop by and spend a night or two. This is one of the best East Coast National Parks. It really is breath taking and a great example of life in this region w/o being a tourist trap. I used to come several times a year when I lived nearby. I've got lots of memories.
I love Shenandoah National Park!! This is a beautiful National Park. The admission fee is extremely reasonable. It is unique because the park roads are boardered by stone walls built during the CC Camp period. (Great Depression 1930's)
The amount of wildlife is incredible. I've seen black bears, white-tail deer, raccons, squirrels, foxes, hawks, golden eagles, and many other types of animals here. The views are spectular on good days.
The park staff is friendly. Unfortunately due to governmental budget cuts there are areas of the park in need of repair. Hopefully the park will receive the funding needed to make these improvements.
I normally don't eat in the restaurants in the park due to high cost of food. There are some fast food restaurants in the little town of Luray where picnic foods can be purchased before heading to the park.
The guest accomodations are nice but I wouldn't call the experience rustic. I suppose if you are from a metropolitan area this would be a good introduction into the "primitive" camping style. There are also many activities offered for the entire family.
All in all, it's definately an amazing place to visit and I totally recommend it.
The whole trip to Shenandoah National Park was amazing. The first night there my boyfriend and I camped at Big Meadows and the second night we stayed at the lodge. Each of the camping sites comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There was live entertainment at the lodge and a nice little bar as well.
While at the park, which charged minimal entrance and camping fees, we spent most of the time hiking the various trails, including the Appalachian Trail. I would recommend the Rose River Trail which is about a 5 mile moderate hike along waterfalls or the Appalachian Trail which takes you along the waterfalls as well.
I recommend the trip to anyone who loves adventure and wants to get away from daily society.
One of the most compact of the national parks, the name Shenandoah translates into,
"daughter of the stars".
Set in the gentley rolling Blue Ridge mts of Virginia,Shenadoah has amazing vistas and verdant parkways.
We travels the length and breath of the park from Front Royal to Clifton Forge. The tiny pocket size towns scattered along the way provided a picturesque within the valley.
Along the Skyline Drive,as the route is termed,we admired a perfect day, bright sun and clear sky. At night once the stars became visible, the sky put on a show that was every bit as spectacular as the day had been. With the inclusion a few meteor displays in the heavens, the Shenandoah circle encompasses what a national park was meant to be.
