New Haven Colony Historical Society
This 1930s Georgian Revival building sets the stage for exhibits chronicling 350 years of New Haven history. The history of "The Elm City" unfolds in each room of this institution through fine art, furniture, genealogical records, everyday artifacts, and maritime displays. There are special exhibits drawn from the museum collection, such as a recent one on the Amistad incident: captured African slaves who went on trial in New Haven after they mutinied their slave ship.
We stopped by the New Haven Historical Society after visiting the Peaboby. It was close enough to walk on a nice day. There wasn't too much to see there, though. As a n ote, they have free parking - so if you visit there first you can save on parking at the Peabody (Which was only $1 anyway...) Definitely NOT a must see.
I have researched at the Whitney Library at the NHCHS a number of times over the past 5-6 years for my dissertation and have always been afforded both kind treatment by, and the expert knowledge of, Jim Campbell and Frances Skelton. Their knowledge of the city's history and friendly manner have made doing research there a pleasure. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone researching the history of New Haven or any of its motive actors. They have alot of terrific material there and they're great folks as well.
