McAllister House Museum
The fact that one must ring a doorbell and wait for a guide to answer the front door aptly underscores the quaintness of this museum. Built in 1873, this little cottage of history offers a rare peep at life during the Victorian era. Its rooms are meticulously filled with ornate chairs, high-back sofas, rose-colored drapery and "wow-look-at-that" marble fireplaces. There is even a children's room filled with small furniture and antique dolls which have those creepy, staring looks. Timings change post September.
We had great plans to visit the McAllister House. We even called ahead of time to make a reservation only to be told--no reservations necessary. We arrive, and it wasn't at all what we were told. The doors were locked, the sign said open, but no one was in sight. What a disappointment. Better think twice before you put this on your daily vacation agenda.
Exciting history in a nutshell! What a great presentation by Ms Lakes! We were transported back through the early days of our state/nation on a fun and very respectful tour of our history. We especially appreciated this opportunity and were warmly welcomed even though we arrived shortly before closing time. Thank you for going above and beyond! We loved every minute with you and our journey through those early beginnings.
