A heavy indicator that this historical center offers an authentic experience can be gauged by the simple fact it offers sarsaparilla as a beverage. While most such attractions focus on Colorado's "Wild West" days, this center, which is listed on the National Register of Historical Places, underscores the state's homesteading past with renovated buildings, including a Blacksmith shop, and characters in period clothing. Lectures, military re-enactments and a live 1880s baseball game are some of its educational features.

Time travel need not be expensive

Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site is a GREAT place -- kids absolutely loved the American Indian area with tipis, horses and historic interpretors as well as the homestead cabin -- complete with young volunteers in period clothing making candles and telling what it was like to live back in the 1860s! The farm and old house were beautifully restored but the real treat was watching the blacksmith work in his shop. Cows, horses, chickens and even some squawking guineas completed the experience. Very reasonable -- great place right next to the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs to learn all about the history of the place! DON'T MISS IT!
