Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Description

Spend a day at America's only mountainside zoo. It features endangered species in mountain exhibits that resemble their natural habitat. You can walk the hilly terrain or catch the tram at one of seven stops. Hands-on contact with animals is permitted in front of the Aquatics building - giraffes will literally eat from your hand and zoo crackers can be purchased at the entrance. Mountain weather changes rapidly, so bring a light jacket.

Love visiting
By ,
Our family bought a season pass to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in May and we've easily made at least 10 trips since then. Each visit has been great! Our kids (3 & 1) love it and it's a great activity to get them out of the house. The elevators and ramps easily accommodate our huge double stroller. I like that it's not too big and there are several interactive exhibits like feeding the giraffes, budgie buddies, and regular zookeeper talks throughout the day at different animal exhibits. My husband and I both are as captivated as the kids by the animals. We've already decided we'll renew again next spring, and I can't wait to see the Christmas lights they put up around the zoo in December. I've heard it's really neat. Hope you love it too!

Great deal for special needs

IF you are going w/ a person w/a disability, they give you a discount. There are the giraffes that you can feed. Lots of walking/hills There is a trolley that will drive you around which is great for disabled/older people.

Not worth the Time/Not worth the Money.
By ,
The Good: I liked all the walking up and down the hills, good to see some of these kids actually getting some exercise (and some of these parents). I thought the Giraffe exhibit was pretty well made (although entirely too small). Kids can feed the giraffes crackers for a dollar. The Bad: This "Zoo" was incredibly depressing. The animal enclosures are ridiculously small for the amount/size of the animals imprisoned within them. This "Zoo" brags about how many animals it has on display. Where are they all? And its not like they were sleeping or hiding. We did see plenty of replica animal staged within the exhibits. Is the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo not aware of the benefits of using Windex or other streak free glass cleaner on windows? Looks like no one has cleaned any glass there in a few years, which definitely impedes on many of the great views you should get with having a zoo in the side of a mountain. THIS ZOO IS INCREDIBLY UNFRIENDLY TO STROLLER USERS. There are many fence gates that need to be unlatched then pushed open. Very many places where you need to take stairs multiple flights, which they helped out by putting in elevator, great, an elevator that can hold two strollers. Get ready for long wait times to use them. This is a small zoo that isn't worth your time or money.

Awesome Zoo
By ,
This was my first trip to Colorado. I went to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo with my daughter. Being from Arizona and used to the Desert landdcape, I was already in love with all the beautiful pines trees and cooler temps. This zoo is so beautiful and perfectly fits in with the environment of the Colorado atmosphere. I love the way it winds through the mountainside and then the views overlooking Colorado Springs is breathtaking!! All the animal exhibits were so nice and well though out. I have been to many zoos and this by far my favorite. I also loved the abundance of chipmunks that scurried about, begging for treats. Although discouraged by the staff to feed them, it was hard not to toss a cracker and here and there when they were not looking. I had a wonderful time here and intend to return with my husband so he can enjoy the experience as well. A definte must do and see for the whole family!!

Sky Ride worth the money
Our kids (14, 12, 9, 7) all wanted to go to the zoo while we were in Colorado Springs, but with so much to do, we were running short on time. So, I decided to just take them to ride the sky ride. We were able to see the giraffes, bears, bald headed eagle, tiger, goats and lots of chipmunks! At the top, they enjoyed climbing the rock wall. It was well worth the money. By the end of our vacation, our kids were tired, so this was a great way to see the zoo without all the walking! My 9 year old said this was his 2nd favorite thing on the trip (behind white water rafting)!

I loved the zoo, being so up close with the animals was amazing. We had kids with us from 3 to 16 and they all enjoyed the experience. Lots of hills to walk so bring your comfy shoes.

Rainy day but lots of fun!
By ,
We went in the morning on a gray day. Lots of animals were inside, but there were a lot outside too. We got up close and personal with a black bear, although there was a plexiglass window between us. :) The exihibits were unique and not the "same old zoo" type exhibits. There were cages instead of glass (like the Denver Zoo), but you could get within about 5 feet of most animals where you could hear them (and smell them hehe). There was a tiger cub that we looked eye to eye with and when we walked away, you could here it crying for more attention because we were leaving. He was soooo cute! The monkey house was great because you could hear the monkeys calling each other as their voices echoed in their barracks. This is not something I have experienced in other zoos. It started to rain and we ended up in a snake house where the staff was very accomodating with showing the kids the snakes and talking about them. (Who knew a king snake eats rattlesnakes and other snakes? ) The kids got to touch one, too. One of the best experiences was the giraffe area where you can purchase crackers (3 for $1, but they were large crackers you could break up into many pieces). The giraffes put their tongues out and you could just place the crackers on them. It was very cool for kids and adults! We will definitely go back again. An awesome experience!
By ,
I can't express how excited I was to see the giraffes up close and personal. Even at Disney, the giraffes were close, but you went speeding by too fast to even get pictures. THe indoor exhibits were a little smelly, but any barn housing animals is smelly. Overall had a great time and would highly recommend it. Also, the park was very clean and well maintained, we thought it was new.

Zoo fun
By ,
The zoo was in the most beautiful spot! Right on the mountain! We got to see the animals (the kids always like a zoo) and then fantastic scenery as well. The staff was very friendly. The new ski lift ride is extra to ride, but the family loved the view! The giraffes are great! You can purchase crackers and feed the giraffes, and they are always hungry it seems!! Included in the price of the zoo, you can drive up the mountain to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. That was really cool too. The Shrine it very high up, but when you get to the top the view is great! It is amazing that they built this tower so high up! It was beautiful. Going up the spiral stairs made me a little dizzy (motion sickness), but the view was amazing!

The Best Zoo in the USA
By ,
We have been to zoos all over the United States and this one is the cleanest and most interesting that we have found. They do have steep hills to walk but it is worth it. We went to the festival of lights and was truly impressed.
