Trident Booksellers & Cafe, Boulder

I am writing *not* as a tourist but as one who lived in Boulder for five years recently. Trident is my favorite cafe in town for many reasons. In short, great selection of teas, excellent espresso drinks, and warm atmosphere.

In the winter, you can enjoy a cozy seat next to the wood stove. That is especially nice when you're reading and having a good-cup-of-anything.

In the summer, sitting outside in the front sidewalk is awesome. People watching is the thing. Some folks sit out there with their guitar on summer nights and pick away.

There's a nice range of ages here, from college students to seniors.

The place is run by a good guy named Mike. He's a practicing Buddhist and you'll see some elements of that in this lovely cafe.

Wood floors -- did I mention wood floors? Adds to the cozy feeling.

To top it off, there is an excellent bookstore adjacent to the cafe. It's all connected so you can walk right in and peek at some good books without losing your table in the cafe.

Great place! I spent hundreds of hours here over the years and I figure I owe it to all travelers to recommend this over any other cafe in Boulder.

I first went to the Trident to drink wonderful coffee, read, write, think, and meet splendid people during a summer institute I attended in the '80s. I've come back to Boulder every summer since then. My wife and I start our day at the Trident restoring our mental functions with caffeine, a newspaper or a book, and a snack before we jog or hike. We come back to write. My wife has worked on some of her best poetry and criticism there. I've worked on almost every paper I've published for the past 20 or so years in the Trident. We also go there to meet friends, to hear music, and to buy books. If there were more places like the Trident, this would be a far better world to live in. We'll be back again in June. ---Jim Bogen
