Mirror Lake Day Hike
Mirror Lake has been gradually filling up with silt, so it is not as mirror-like as it once was, but the lake's banks do provide a glorious view of Half Dome rock. Start from Shuttle Stop 17. This is considered an easy walk, with a mild uphill grade. The distance is just about a mile, and you will probably complete the round-trip in about an hour. This area can get crowded in summer. The trail stays open some winters, depending on snow depth, but in winter hikers must start from Shuttle Stop 19, which adds another mile to the trip. In summer months, there is access for vehicles with current disability placards.
When my wife and I took this walk at the beginning of August 06 during our honeymoon, we had just past the lake and had walked on a little bit. Suddenly we heard the crack of a twig and to our amazement to our left about 30-40 yards away was a bear. We froze and watched as it wondered on to the path in front of us and sniff the air. He turned and spotted us. Briefly looked at us stodd up on his hind legs before bolting off away from us. I have to say it was the most amazing animal encounter ever and something we will never forget. The lake it's self was pretty dry but the walk was in nice surroundings. Not the best walk in the park but pretty easy going and not many people about so if your looking to catch a look at a bear well worth the trip.
This is a "short" hike in hikers terms. I believe it is only about a mile or two from Camp Curry. We found it best to hike the trail that parallels the road and not hike straight up the road.
Expect a LOT of people in this area if you are planning to visit in the summer. Not only does the bus drop people off right at the lake, this is probably the most hiked place in the valley other than Lower Yosemite Falls.
These days it's not so much of a "lake" anymore but rather a marshy meadow. There are areas where you can find great reflections of Half Dome though. Bring your insect repellant in the summer because there are misquitos there.
If you find Mirror Lake to be too crowded for your taste you can opt to continue hiking up the Teneya Canyon to Teneya Bridge and then come back on the opposite side of the river. This will add a couple miles to your hike and there will be a lot less people around to spoil the scenery.
