A Little Jewel in the Sierra
By G, 10/12/09
Wawona Golf Course is an historic jewel of a course in the mid-Sierra. The first golf course in the Sierra, Wawona is a 9-hole layout (with dual tees for playing 18) that offers variety and challenge for the golfer whose game emphasizes shot-making, not just banging it long. Shorter than most modern courses, at 3,050 yards for 9 holes, Wawona offers two par-5 holes and three par-3s - and every hole is interesting and memorable.
I have played Wawona once a year for the last few years, during an annual late October trip to the area. It's always great fun - the scenery is beautiful, and the course offers challenging - and unique - holes (when was the last time you saw a periscope on a golf course? Wawona has on on the 5th hole to allow you to see over the rise that renders the fairway a blind shot).
The rates are reasonable - $25.50 for 9 holes on the weekend - and the atmosphere is laid-back. I look forward to my annual outing here, and only wish that I could make it up here more often - even with the 4-hour drive from the Bay Area!
