The Best Excursion Train in California!
Historically significant excursion train ride offers something for everybody. There is a shaded picnic area for those who bring their own feast, and a snack bar for those who don't. Food includes sandwiches, soda, beer, snacks and ice cream. Adjacent to the picnic area is the ticket agent / gift shop, which is well stocked with quality train and Yosemite merchandise, clothing, books, etc. On the lower level is a quaint museum, a larger bookstore, and a gold panning area.
The YMSPRR features two Shay locomotives, and there is nothing quite like riding behind 83 tons of pure power. I love the sights and sounds of live steam, and this train has it all. The ride through the forest is beautiful, shaded, and narrated quite well, giving the visitor information about the flora and fauna, indigenous peoples, construction, operation and demise of the logging operations in the area, and the history of the current excursion railroad.
This is a perfect half-day event for the whole family. It is always fun to see kids (of all ages) eyes light up when they see the train pulling into the station for the first time. This is a very popular attraction, so plan ahead. Remember too, this is in the mountains, be prepared for summer thunderstorms. Sunscreen, and hats are advisable. Pack a picnic, bring the kids, and have a blast.
