Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad
This train is a restoration of the narrow-gauge Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company Railroad. The four-mile track was rebuilt using original techniques, and it runs two vintage shay steam locomotives pulling a few passenger cars. You will hear the engine whistle, snort, blow and more. You will also be in the forest and get a good feel for what logging was probably like in the 19th century. The trains run on a variety of daily schedules from March through October.
Unless u have kids and they enjoy sing a longs, the whole thing was lame and over priced. We did the night tour and the train went for ten minutes then stopped and some worn out guitar player and singer sang songs for an hour. Then we got back on the train for ten minutes and it was over. They do serve a picnic style dinner before. I was expecting a steak dinner for the price. Save your money as there are far better things to do in Yosemite.
Historically significant excursion train ride offers something for everybody. There is a shaded picnic area for those who bring their own feast, and a snack bar for those who don't. Food includes sandwiches, soda, beer, snacks and ice cream. Adjacent to the picnic area is the ticket agent / gift shop, which is well stocked with quality train and Yosemite merchandise, clothing, books, etc. On the lower level is a quaint museum, a larger bookstore, and a gold panning area.
The YMSPRR features two Shay locomotives, and there is nothing quite like riding behind 83 tons of pure power. I love the sights and sounds of live steam, and this train has it all. The ride through the forest is beautiful, shaded, and narrated quite well, giving the visitor information about the flora and fauna, indigenous peoples, construction, operation and demise of the logging operations in the area, and the history of the current excursion railroad.
This is a perfect half-day event for the whole family. It is always fun to see kids (of all ages) eyes light up when they see the train pulling into the station for the first time. This is a very popular attraction, so plan ahead. Remember too, this is in the mountains, be prepared for summer thunderstorms. Sunscreen, and hats are advisable. Pack a picnic, bring the kids, and have a blast.
WHAT IS NOT TO LIKE, THE TRAIN SAYS IT ALL. THE RIDE, ATMOSPHERE, KNOWLEDGE OF THE PERSONNEL, AND THE VALUE ARE THE BEST VALUE I HAVE HAD IN ALONG TIME. WE JUST WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD SAVE THE HISTORY OF OUR NATION AND ITS TREASURES THE WAY THE SUGAR PINE RR DID. WE WILL BE THE AGAIN SEPT 2007.
We did the Moonlight package and it was great! It started off with a BBQ dinner (very tasty but typical). While eating we were serenaded by 3 singers with guitars. We then boarded the train and took a ride to a grove of trees where they set up a campfire. We sang songs, they told jokes and stories. We then rode back.
We had 5 kids with us and 4 adults - couldn't tell you who enjoyed it more. This was a bit pricey but well worth it.
