Otay Lake

Description

This lake has a reputation among fishermen as the prime location to catch largemouth bass. In fact, more bass are caught per fisherman at this location than at any other nearby lake. Other catches include catfish and crappie. Located at an elevation of 490 feet, the lake is a popular spot for casting a line. The fishing fee is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 8-15. Boats are permitted and a launch ramp is provided for a $5 fee. Rowboats or motorboats may be rented and various supplies such as ice and bait are sold too.

Finding Otay Lakes
By ,
25 years ago when I first went in search of Otay Lakes, it was out in the boonies! Dirt roads crisscrossed the area. I never found them even though they were clearly marked on the map. The roads were not as clearly marked on the ground. Now, it's paved all the way to the lake. Now, Yahoo travel shows Otay Lakes in La Mesa. Having lived within 1 mile of the Lake in Chula Vista CA, don't make the mistake of driving to La Mesa to start your search. An entire community called Eastlake has grown up in Chula Vista...there is a connection there. Also, the Olympic Training Center uses the lake for watersports training. The Olympic Training Center sits above the lake and is a nifty place to spend a couple of hours on a free tour. The lakes, Upper and Lower, offer excellant fishing during posted fishing days and hours. Boat rentals are available on the lower lake (call ahead to make a reservation). Fishing licenses, bait and snacks are available on site. Boaters line up early on weekends to get on the lake and there is plenty of trailer parking.

Okies at Otay
By ,
First time at Lower Otay, I met two other Okies at the boat ramp getting ready to go out and fish. Later that day while on the lake, met the same two Okies. Flagging me down, they had a nice 8.9 lb bass to show me. It takes an Okie to pull this kind of fish out.......first trip out. Enjoyed our trip.
