Finding Otay Lakes
25 years ago when I first went in search of Otay Lakes, it was out in the boonies! Dirt roads crisscrossed the area. I never found them even though they were clearly marked on the map. The roads were not as clearly marked on the ground. Now, it's paved all the way to the lake.
Now, Yahoo travel shows Otay Lakes in La Mesa. Having lived within 1 mile of the Lake in Chula Vista CA, don't make the mistake of driving to La Mesa to start your search. An entire community called Eastlake has grown up in Chula Vista...there is a connection there. Also, the Olympic Training Center uses the lake for watersports training. The Olympic Training Center sits above the lake and is a nifty place to spend a couple of hours on a free tour.
The lakes, Upper and Lower, offer excellant fishing during posted fishing days and hours. Boat rentals are available on the lower lake (call ahead to make a reservation). Fishing licenses, bait and snacks are available on site.
Boaters line up early on weekends to get on the lake and there is plenty of trailer parking.
