Located in northern San Diego County, this man-made reservoir offers picnic tables, camping facilities and boat rentals. The lake is a popular spot to fish for bass, catfish and trout. Fishing fees range from USD3-5. With four piers located around the lake, many opt for shore fishing. The boating at this lake is restricted to boats rented on the premises; rowboats or motorboats. In addition, the lake has bait, tackle and ice for sale. No swimming and no pets are permitted.
I've lived here in Escondido since 1972. This lake has always been a great fishing spot for Bass, Trout and Catfish. Now that all of the trees and shrubbery have grown up around the lake - there is now plent of shade! The campground is amazing. Most all sites have great vies of either the lake or the city of Escondido below. There are a few sites that have vistas of both!
Daley ranch (next door) offers great hiking and horseback riding! Bring your kids they'll love it!
This is really a nice fishing lake. Being a man-made reservoir, the lake is quite deep in spots, there's lots of structure and coves and it's easy to either fish from shore, the handicapped accessible fishing pier or rental boat.
I've also hiked and camped many times here. It's not remote and can get a little crowded, especially on weekends, but it's fantastic on weekdays. Some of the campgrounds and hiking trails offer a overlook of the city of Escondido.
This area also has a lot of wildlife! Osprey, great blue herons, turkey vultures, various ducks and songbirds have been seen, and there are also raccoons, opossums and other mammals, as well as various snakes and lizards.
If you want to visit one of the best city parks in the country, then Dixon Lake City Park should top your list of things to do. The entire park is keenly well maintained. I've visited this place twice - all the way from NC, just to see the lake and do some fishing. The water is extremely clean. It has a plentiful harvest of freshwater clams...a sure sign of water purity. Every single one of the staff members are most helpful and friendly. There is even a campsite offering all of the neccessities of camping and several of the campsites offer breath-taking views for it sits on a mountainside. The numerous plant and animal life that can be found offer the naturalists a heaven vacation place. The Daley Ranch is next to Dixon and offers lots of hiking and biking trails through the avocado-covered mountains of Northern San Diego County. Here, wildlife is most plentiful and most beautiful. The plants are a trip in themselves with blooms popping out in late February. My most fascinating discovery of this area was the campground. It's awesome! At the lake, you can rent jon boats with electric motors, which is plenty ample to fish the entire lake. The "park squirrels and birds" will surround you if you offer them some popcorn from the concession stand. This would be a treat for the youngsters to enjoy doing, and would make for some good photos to bring back home as a reminder of your trip. The City Of Escondido operates both the Dixon Lake and Daley Ranch Parks, and may I say this city cuts no corners in taking care of their little hidden secret. The people of the community are very nice and friendly and freely offer any advice you may need or just a simple chat. This is one of the nicest city parks in America. I highly recommend it as your vacation destination in the future.
