Cabrillo National Monument and Point Loma Lighthouse
Part of the National Park Service, Cabrillo National Monument and Point Loma Lighthouse offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city of San Diego and far beyond. It was erected in honor of Captain Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European to set foot on the west coast. Also on the site is the original lighthouse, which was replaced in 1891 by the one that still steers vessels away from shore. Tidepools delight young and old, history buffs enjoy the museum, and hiking enthusiasts are challenged by the trails. Gift shop and snacks are available.
This is my 3rd trip, this time, the weather was awesome, sunny and clear day, so the view was spectacular. It offers everything, view, history, sense of peace. I live in Irvine, it is only 1 1/2 hours trip, and the drive was wonderful too. Perfect for the day trip.
Situated in the Southwestern corner of San Diego, this place is incredibly scenic! We went to a point called Ocean view, where we can see the Pacific Ocean on 2 sides and the
San Diego Bay and the downtown on the other. There is also the beautiful Coronado Bridge and an Airforce base, where we witnessed a fighter jet land! There was an ear-piercing
Point loma lighthouse is also worth a visit. It is the southwestern most point in Continental US. It is very easy to get to and worth the time. I would highly recommend it as a place to visit in San Diego.
Point Loma is one of our favorite spots in San Diego and we go twice a year. So much to do in the Cabrillo Monument area - see the old and new lighthouses, visit the museum and gift shop, enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view of San Diego and the ocean, take a walk on the winding path and see the old WW2 bunker, and enjoy the constant Pacific breezes. Don't forget to visit Rosecrans Cemetery and eat at the Point Loma Seafood Restaurant.
Cabrillo National Monument and the Point Loma Lighthouse provide the BEST view of San Diego harbor. On a clear day, which is most days in this great city, you feel as though you can literally see forever. This is a good place for the experienced traveler and youngsters and there's a lot more to see than just the monument area and lighthouse. The tide pools are great to explore and the trails are fun to hike. The WW II history of Point Loma is also depicted in a small, but informative exhibit close to the lighthouse. For a momemt of quiet reflection, stop at the military cemetary after you leave the monument.
You can see the whole San Diego cityscape from Cabrillo. People have taken pictures of the city & the snow capped mtns before. Walking around the tide pools is lots of fun. Sometimes you can see the whales when they are migrating.
The trip does not start at Cabrillo National Monument. I have a child buried at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery so that is where our trip started. It is a beautiful drive along the ocean. After the cemetery we continued on up the road. Still breath taking. We stopped at the tide pools. The kids loved getting their feet wet trying to find all the sea creatures that are listed on the board. We could spend hours up there. Then off to the light house. It is a very educational place to stop. It shows some war time facts. The light house is set up like it may have been in the days. You can see Coronado from the light house. It still takes my breath away no matter how many times we go up there. My son asked to go back in 2 weeks.
