The San Diego Museum of Art is the region's oldest, largest, and most visited art museum, providing a rich and diverse cultural experience for nearly 300,000 visitors each year. Located in the heart of beautiful Balboa Park, the museum's nationally renowned permanent collection includes Spanish and Italian old masters, South Asian paintings, and 19th and 20th Century American paintings and sculptures. In addition, the museum regularly features major exhibitions from around the world, as well as an extensive year-round schedule of supporting cultural and educational programs for children and adults. Exhibition text is always in English and Spanish. The Museum's research library offers access to an extensive collection of art history publications.
They have a great permanent collection: Mexican American Art, Asian Art, Tons of beautiful paintings that are always changing.
Over the summer, they have some big time exhibitions scheduled: Richard Avedon, Portraits of Power AND Calder Jewelry.
In June, they have a short celebration called "Art Alive"...well-known floral designers create floral inspirations of famous works of art. It is June 12-14. This sounds really amazing.
Before visiting the museum, I was under the impression that the museum is always the same (except in the event of a special exhibition like an Avedon or Calder) BUT it isn't -- our guide told us that they have thousands of pieces in the museum's permanent collection and they are constantly rotating them so there is always something new and different. Now that I know that, I will I will definitely be going back more often.
