Catering to the needs (some would say whims) of the upscale visitors and lucky locals who live in La Jolla, this popular shopping area consists of exclusive clothing boutiques, perfumeries and jewelry stores which grudgingly sharing space with a few beachwear specialists. Art galleries vie with each other to present the most favored artists, sometimes including sketches or other works from stellar artists such as Da Vinci and Van Gogh, but there are also galleries devoted to less-expensive wildlife photography and modern favorite whale muralist Wyland. The only thing hard to find here are shoes that are not made of imported Italian leather. Even the sole charity benefit shop in this area specializes in European antiques. Don't shop until you drop - settle into one of the sidewalk cafes and take a breather.
The people who work in the shops in this area act utterly desperate! They practically pounce on you when you walk in the stores. The sales people make shopping impossible because they are so desperate to sell anything. My husband and I literally cringed at the desperation.
