Fish House Vera Cruz
Just seconds away from the Pacific Ocean, this wildly popular Carlsbad restaurant serves fresh catch to both locals and tourists. A fish market counter dominates the lobby, where customers may order fresh catch to cook at home. Of course, most patrons opt for the full dining experience. Inside the dining room, bright tablecloths are plastered with fish prints. On the menu, Krab Salad is a customer favorite. Fresh catch may include salmons, Atlantic cods or rainbow trouts, served with your choice of sides, such as Green Salad and Romano Potatoes.
My boyfriend and i had been wanting to go to this place for a while now, because we had heard rave reviews from everyone and we drive by it all the time thinking that it was really nice restaurant.
To our surprise as soon as we stepped in, we felt as though we were in a very out-dated red lobster kind of place. All the table cloths were colorful and adorned with all different types of sea creatures, and the old tables and blue wooden chairs did not compliment them well. However i do think that the place does have a lot of potential. they just need to revamp everything.
For appetizers we ordered fresh oysters on the half shell, those were actually very good, but how wrong can you go with fresh Raw oysters. and the bread that we got before the meal was warm and quite good.
For dinner i had ordered king crab with ramona potatoes and fresh veggies, and my boyfriend the halibut and shrimp combo. My king crab was grilled perfectly, however the sides were a big big disappointment. for the veggies it had looked like and tasted like they just used frozen prepacked vegetable and cooked them for far too long. it was so mushy that i felt i was eating baby food. and the side of potatoes were cold and not all that good either.
over all, the seafood was excellent, but it was way too overpriced, for what it came with and for just the restaurant in itself. my boyfriend and both agree that we would not ever go back. which really is a shame because we do love seafood.
Im a long time customer of fish house vera cruz..
I've been to all 3 locations, Temecula, Carlsdbad & San Marcos. San marcos has been the best of the best off all 3 locations.. Even though they all serve 2 sides instead of 3, their sourdough bread is junk now! I know they had to do some cuts due to this recession.. But hopefully they do survive this mess and continue with their old same standards.

I am a fish lover! Of course, fresh fish usually tastes better than frozen fish, and I haven't tried anything but fresh at Fish House Vera Cruz. I've had fish that I caught myself fresh out of the Gulf of Mexico in Florida and up until now, that was the best fish I had ever had in my life. Now I can say that Fish House Vera Cruz has the best fish I have ever had in my life! I've only been there twice, once in San Marcos and once in Carlsbad, but I'm sure I will be back many more times. The 5-star rating is well-deserved. I love this place! Both times, I ordered the Dorado and it was prepared to absolute perfection, so tender and juicy, and no bones in sight. I ordered crab cakes and scallops as appetizers and they were perfectly prepared also. I will be taking everyone that comes to visit me to the Fish House Vera Cruz for sure! Yummo!
My husband and I love this place. We live in San Clemente and love to find the best seafood restaurants. Well, this is it. The shrimp and scallops are out of this world. I can't wait for my birthday. This will be where we eat for sure. Love the fresh fish selection. It is huge!
I have eaten at Fish House Vera Cruz, Carlsbad for lunch on two occasions so far, and I've enjoyed it tremendously. Each time I had the Fish Kabob lunch with Romano Potatoes and Coleslaw. The salmon, shrimp, scallops, and talapia were cooked to perfection, shrimp and scallops succulent, and the fish moist! There was Tartar Sauce and Lemon Butter for dipping. When you sit down, they bring a fresh baked miniloaf of sourdough bread with whipped butter! Yummy! Service was attentive, prices were just right for my budget. You do have to wait a bit for your meal (they cook it for you when the order is placed). Fish House Vera Cruz will remain one of my favorite lunch spots as long as they keep up the good work!
We didn't realize that we'd eaten here before - the steamed vegetables are CARROTS - nothing else. The fish is DRY - The potatoes are DRY the pilaf was very average - mediocre ... I wanted great seafood while visiting here. I the King Salmon, my hubby the Tombo Tuna ... both somewhat expensive, but both were so dry they were almost not palatable.
Sorry ...not a go here. BUT the wine was a good value and the service ok.
I am not a fan of seafood but this place definitely makes everything so good. Ah! it is only seafood, don't expect to find chicken or steak, not even for kids meals. It offers a lot (a lot!) of fresh options additional to their regular menu. When we went we had to wait for around 30 minutes, it was worth! If we ever go back to Carlsbad or pass by, this is going to be a must stop.
The food is fabulous and the ambiance is just perfect for a relaxing weekday dinner with that special someone. Can't get a bad table in the place and the sourdourgh bread is delicious. Am a fish lover and would have to say, this restaurant beats out many I have been to throughout the San Diego County. As a sales rep, that's many!
Wow, what a disappointment after all the 5 stars from others. Must be their family writing these reviews. We had lunch there today in Carlsbad. The clam chowder had a very strong vinegar taste. When I told the waitress she said, "Oh, yah, someone else just mentioned that, sorry about that. I think they just made a new batch." No mention of bringing something else or giving a refund or free dessert or whatever. Just "sorry about that." My husband had the Krab Sandwich and said it had way too much mayo and was very bland. All in all, a poor experience. We will never go back.
Four couples were able to eat fresh fish, devour several loaves of bread and sit and talk for two hours, while our waitress
would stop by to offer more bread, water and dessert. We were allowed to savor the food and the ambiance without feeling rushed. Therefore we left a large tip for an enjoyable time had by all at our table.
