Blue Guitar (The)
Watch for the illuminated blue neon guitar to guide you to this second-story club near the Plaza Theater. Once inside, enjoy the best blues music in Coachella Valley. The stage offers a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system just off a hardwood dance floor. The street-side balcony also holds a few tables, ideal for looking down on the crowds passing below. There is a USD10 cover charge on Fridays and Saturdays for the 9pm show. There is a free blues concert on Sundays. The music is the draw, but they also serve a mean gumbo and cheesecake.
Was there 2000, every weekend was a blast. Planning a 2 month trip again only to read that the Great great sounds are gone! I guess people didn't value great musicians cause i know Kal and wife loved being there and entertaining. Would love to see them again wherever

My husband and I loved the Blue Guitar and would always stop by when we were in town. At the end of August we were in the area and decided to visit the Blue Guitar. It is now a gay bar....repeat....gay bar. The sign for the Blue Guitar is still outside, so it was VERY misleading. They should take the sign down!! It is sad that the Blue Guitar is gone.
What happened to the blues music? Last visit was disappointing since the club played soul. Not that I don't like soul. It just when you travel over 60 miles to hear the blues and there isn't any, it makes you want to travel to orange county instead.
We had been to the Blue Guitar before when Kal and Laurie owned it, but have not been there for a few years. We finally went back a couple of weeks ago and, wow, what a difference!!! The atmosphere was superb and the music there was so much fun!!! Everyone was having a such a great time that it was hard not to get caught up in the fun. And when we were leaving the owner was actually there and thanked us for coming. Well worth a visit.
I've been going to the Blue Guitar since the first owner had it (a Blues Musician). And yes, it was great! However, he sold it to a different owner who in turn sold it to another owner (present owners). I've come to know the new owners personally, and I know the club was not making it on Blues alone, so they had to mix it up. Blues is still being played on certain nights, and the original 3 musicians are still there. Only one is gone. There is now a variety, and the customers vary as well depending on what's being played that particular night. Business is picking up, and everything is improving. Yes, the old Blues fans and musicians are unhappy with the change, but the club wouldn't be open at all for anyone to go to unless a change had been made. The previous comment is totally wrong and uneducated!
Went in July, 2007 - what a disappointment! New owners, apparently put some $$ into a new bar, tables, chairs - but forgot to keep the great music! No longer a real "blues" club, the musicians are little more than regular "bar band locals". Sadly, the world class blues musicians from the past 6 or 7 years are gone. A Good blues club can be a "dive" as long as the great screamin' blues guitar & B3 are keepin' the blues alive. Don't waste your time unless the former blues artists return.
I have visited the Blue Guitar three times and all three times were extremely enjoyable. The first time I watched Kal's band with a friend of mine. The band grooved so well that everyone's head (including employees) was bobbing to the rythm all night - you couldn't help it! I visited two other times for the club's "pro open mike jam" and got to see alot of fantastic, seasoned musicians and also got to sit in with some great back-up musicians. The crowd was very warm and enthusiastic and I am looking forward to going back again as soon as I can. My friends and I still talk about it alot. In addition to having a good, mature atmosphere, the club also had some decent food. It is a little pricey but I have had worse nights that costed more. I suppose one must pay a price to see some classy seasoned musicians do their thing all night long - what a treat!
