Steinbeck's Spirit of Monterey Wax Museum

Description

Want to see John Steinbeck sitting around and drinking with friends? Then come to this wax museum. You can get a glimpse at almost 450 years of Monterey history here. The museum stocks more than 100 realistic wax figures, depicting a number of scenes throughout time. See figures of old cannery workers, prostitutes and Indians. This is one of the newest attractions in Cannery Row and a great place to bring the entire family. Call the venue for more information about admission prices and more.

No redeeming value
By Sammee, 1/30/12
even having read the reviews, we (I the mom decided we would) do this thing. It was dark, delapidated, figures did or didn't work, scary as heck (my 10 yr old boy didn't want to get out from behind me), Even I wanted out. It's small, and you can't hear one figure speaking cause if any one is farther down and that wax figure is talking, you hear both I complained to the ticket girl, who just giggled. Waste of time, money and horrific.

DON'T GO THERE
By DD, 1/14/10
Don't spend your money for the ticket - not worth a dime. If you absolutely want to learn about it, spend the 10 bucks and get a book and couple things from the gift shop.

Inexpensive Fun History
By Theodore, 10/19/09
Inexpensive and fun away from the crowds. I learned a lot about the history of Monterey walking through the museum. This museum and Point Lobos are the closest you and the kids will get to the spirit of old Monterey before the tourists invaded.

Enjoyed it!
By PJ S, 8/4/09
We visited and enjoyed the museum. Worth the price and very interesting. I found it well kept and clean. Dark, but that added to it, I enjoyed the guided tour by audio and lights, photos came out great as well. We enjoyed it and would go again!

The Kids Loved It!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/6/09
My kids loved this; they enjoyed every minute in the wax museum. As an adult I was not so impressed, but I would highly reccomend this to anyone wit children 12 and under.

Horrible waste of money!
By word., 3/10/09
This place is a joke...no wax figures...they are plastic maniquins from kmart. it was dirty...dark and no where near a good experience. I took my daughter thinking it would be a fun thing to see....we walked out shaking our heads ...thinking what was that all about? The figures are all so poorly taken care of that you can't harly take it serious. $14.00 for 2 people...and a 20 minute walk yourself through our basement...no bueno! We got to Monterey a couple times a year...and when we walk past this place we look at each other and laugh....so for the lasting joke i guess we got our money's worth.

Pilchards!
it used to be more entertaining, at least in a drunken, already done everything else and it's rainy and cold sort of way. The Sardines, Pilchards, that is, on teh conveyor belt used to move and flop around and somehow, maybe being drunk and all, it was hilarious to see...at least maybe once. I went back with the kid years alter and somehow it was less funny, especially with the rubber fish just sitting there.

Not A Highlight
By PG Karen, 10/12/06
I don't think this is one of the highlights of the Monterey Bay, even Cannery Row. It's a poorly lit basement with wax figures in it. For $7 per person, you walk through and look at wax figures/mannequins while a tape plays. The adults and children in our group did not find this entertaining or informative. I was very surprised to see this rated #12 on the "to do" list. We found it to be dark, dirty and creepy.

Not worth it!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/23/05
This isn't on my personal list of "things to do" in monterey. First thing its kind of like a guided tour. But not a tour guide, only a timed lighting system. After a long poor quality audio narration of what you see infront of you, simply walk on to the next scene in history. The sign said over 100 wax characters but it seemed alot less. I was amazed that somebody would charge $7.00 per person for that wax museum. Do yourself a favor and find something else to do.
