National Steinbeck Center

Description

Located in the Monterey County town of Salinas, the lettuce capital of the world, this museum is a tribute to Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. A Bay Area native, Steinbeck attended Stanford University in Palo Alto after he graduated from Salinas High School in 1919. His most famous works include Tortilla Flat (1935) and the Pulitzer Prize winner The Grapes of Wrath (1939). His birthplace and childhood home, The Steinbeck House, is two blocks away from the museum. In the cultural center you can see Steinbeck's works, letters and photographs, hear lectures and take tours. It also hosts an annual Steinbeck Festival in honor of the author.

Hands-on Fun
By ,
I visited the Steinbeck Center with my husband and two children ( aged 7 and 9). I am an English teacher, so I knew that I would enjoy visiting as Steinbeck is my favorite author. I was worried that my children would find it boring. I couldn't have been more wrong. The center was set up so that each of Steinbeck's novels had a hands-on activity that went along with it. My kids enjoyed looking, touching or sitting on all of the exhibits. They actually said, "Mommy can we stay?"

Native Visitor

This is a nice place to view the history of Salinas as it once was. Steinbeck is one of my favorite writers. I grew up just down the street of his home on Central Avenue. This was an excellent addition to Salinas. Its a beautiful complex where you can visit all the creative arts and literature of the valley. But stay out of the East side of town. The active gang activity and the influx of the hispanic community has all but nearly ruined this once beautiful and small community. This was once a rich and thriving area, and beautiful to visit. The weather is something you can't buy. And its sad to see the once beautiful homes and lawns turned into parking places or junk yards for beat-up unused large lowriding cars. Its just a shame.

You have to go!
By ,
This place has a wonderful atmosphere and a great souvenier shop. To really understand this place you MUST read at least one or two of his books. My friend had a Quinceanera and my Godmother(madrina)had her wedding ther and the scenery is beautiful! Most people dont know about the problem going on in Salinas... they're closing the libraries! How can this be? Stainbeck must have been at libraries to learn his skills. Anyways you have to go if your in the area!

Read first

Only visited once even though I just live down the street. Amazing interactive exibits but I wasn't up to date on all my Steinbeck readings. I would suggest touring the museum only after a few books, the main favorites for sure, but some of the short stories, "The Red Pony", "The Christamums" (sorry misspelled) is my favorite story most people can relate to. A brand new parking garage has just been built next door and should make visiting more comfortable. I have also been to a wedding here and that was wonderfully done as well.
