Monterey Bay Kayaks
Since the mid-1980s, this place has been introducing people to the fun activity of kayaking, with the added bonus of educating the customers about the preservation of marine life in the Monterey area. The store sells and rents all sorts of kayaks and has a variety of classes. The staff members are all accomplished experts, and many corporate group programs are available. Enjoy water sports and learn about the environment.
Great location, closest to the slough, but staff trained only to make sales and charge credit cards.
I reserved two open canoes for myself and three grown children on July 4th and a pick up at Kirby landing. I was told to expect the trip would take two and a half to three hours. Regular pick up is scheduled only twice a day, we arranged for the 12:30 pick up.
The slough is wonderful and this criticism is not about the experience of kayaking, but about the inability of the staff to look after their customers once kayaks are launched.
We set out not knowing how long it would take us to paddle up, but completed the trip in half the time. At the landing dock, the weather was lousy, cold and windy. There is no shelter, no phone, no protection from the elements. Another party at the landing was waiting for the weather to turn warmer and called Monterey Bay Kayaks on our behalf to ask for an earlier pick up. Staff turned down the request.
It was so cold and windy, we had to huddle in the lee of a two foot wall to keep warm and waited, and waited for an hour and a half, shivering, until one of the kayak jockeys showed up with a smile on scheduled time. Back at the office I confronted the staff and the store manager about their lack of care for their customers' well being, but they couldn't have cared less, never asked about the conditions, and could only focus on meeting their scheduled pick up obligation (no exceptions allowed in their mind). There was no other party to pick up, the driver could have easily been sent to relieve us from the cold, but the manager and the appointed guide are not trained, nor have the personality traits, to provide end to end customer service. They swipe credit cards and launch kayaks.
Once launched, no assistance will be offered.
I recommend using another operator.
Training was great, and our guide, Amber was fun, and provided so much info on the bay. She really involved the kids, and quizzed them about lots of ocean facts, which she made into a game. We really enjoyed our trip, and would LOVE to go again. The store staff is GREAT too!
My family (17 years daughter, 14 years son, wife) and I, 48 attended Basik Skill class today as a family activity today. We had no experience of Kayaking. The trainer, Jim, was a great person, very knowledgeable, and took care of each of us very carefully to make sure that we master basic skill and have fun and great experience.
Jim was very trustworthy and nice guy. The class experience and ovservation experience of sea animuls such as Sea Otters very closely with the similar eye level was faburous experience.
I would recommend to take classes and have fun tours here.
Since water temperature is about 53 degree, you need to well prepare for it. Monterey Bay Kayak and the trainers will give you suggestions to make sure you will be comfortable in the class and/or tour. You can buy all equipment you need at MBK as we did. There equipments are good enough and we had a nice experience.
Have a fun!
Thank you Jim!! We become Kayaking lovers.
These folks were our first introduction to sea kayaking (our first trip was into the Elkhorn Slough from their Moss Landing location). You can rent for a couple of hours or an afternoon, take classes, or go on a tour. They even have tours for families with fairly young children (I believe that the children ride in a kayak with a certified instructor). For rentals, they provide all necessary equipment and instruction, and won't let you go out if it conditions aren't clearly safe. Obviously, they would have to do this for liability reasons, but it adds comfort to know that when you're just starting out.
Most people seem to use them as a one-time way to experience Monterey Bay from a perspective that you don't usually get. My daughter started out that way, but got hooked. We came back for more rentals, then classes, and finally bought our own boats from them during their last PaddleFest/Spring Sale. We found them to be helpful and pleasant to deal with at every step of the way.
