London Bridge Pub
The only waterfront pub on the West Coast, this British-style drinking hole has over 60 international beers, indoor and outdoor seating, traditional pub games, a gift shop, and lots more. The interior is decorated in the traditonal British pub-style, with memorabilia all over the walls. The menu offers a variety of salads, as well as British dinners and Happy Hour specials. The friendly bartenders bring in all walks of life.
I will go back to the London Bridge Pub in Monterey ONLY when Seamus Kennedy performs there again. He makes it worthwhile even though the service is average and the food is below average.
The fries our group had there last night had no flavor and were mostly hard.
The battered fish (we had fish and chips) was greasy due to the poor quality (and/or temperature) of the cooking oil, I suspect.
I've eaten there once before and was not impressed with the food then, either.
Unfortunately, this time, the Pub had not done a good job of advertising that Seamus Kennedy was playing there, and many of the customers were more interested in talking to each other loudly that letting the rest of us enjoy Seamus' outstanding performan.
After reading the reviews here, my wife and I went to the London Bridge Pub for fish and chips while visiting Monterey.
On the afternoon we arrived, an employee was sitting on a bench adjacent to the front entry and was smoking a cigarette. There was a haze of foul smelling smoke we had to walk through to get inside.
Although there were several tables occupied by customers, there was no one on the floor to greet or seat us. We stood expectantly for several minutes waiting for someone to seat us. Finally a man behind the bar who had been watching us since we first arrived, finally spoke to us and told us to seat ourselves.
Eventually, the man tending bar came around onto the floor and gave us menus and later returned to take our orders.
We had a meal of fish and chips with iced tea as a beverage. As we were finishing our meal,I saw a long strand of black hair (my hair is grey and shorter) interwined in the ice of my drink. I pointed this out to the "waiter" who took the glass away with a "sorry".
He returned to the table and with another "sorry about that" then presented the check for the meal and drinks. There were no adjustments to the bill and we were charged FULL PRICE for this disgusting end to our meal.
I gave the meal a 'two' only for the fish. If you live in California and want much better fish and chips, at a better price too, stop off at 'The Quarterdeck' in Grover Beach or one of the several fine places in Morro Bay.
If you've read this far, you can tell that from my experience at this eatery that I think it is overated and that there are many other places in California which are superior.
The place is small inside and I think the ambience is nothing to be excited over unless you are one who enjoys being surrounded by a hodge-podge of various odd but not unusual items.
If you are a beer drinker, in my opinion there are many micro-breweries in California which offer a better variety of beers along with better ambience. You might want to seek them out instead of bothering with the London Bridge Pub.
Will Drive over 3.5 hrs just for the Fish n Chips!

I've been going there for over 10 years - I love this place! The food is great, the staff is nice and fun and the prices are not to expensive.
In fact, we are leaving right now - a drive of over 3.5 hours- just to have Fish n Chips at the Pub!
My wife and I would eat here at least twice a month when we lived in Carmel. Food is great, service is always friendly, and the atmosphere was always enjoyable. I would recomend the London Bridge Pub to anyone who makes their way out to Monterey.
The menu is a riot to read, i.e. the calamari sandwich being called the "freakish tentacled sea creature sandwich," but it's really all about the fish & chips - or even better, the "fish bits" appetizer done extra crispy. YUM!
Service is great - say hi to Rick if he's still bartending there, and ask him to tell you why men and pantyhose are alike.
If you're traveling west of the Mississippi River, you HAVE to visit this pub. 'A great place to complete your thesis! Staff, food, and friendliness are second to none, and it completes the Monterey experience!
