Watts Towers is one of the great local landmarks in Los Angeles. Created by construction worker Simon Rodia over a period of three decades from 1921 to 1954, the monument consists of scrap metal, pipe structures, bed frames and thousands of seashells. While Rodia's resourcefulness is amazing, this is truly an impressive piece of work for any artist, given its 17 isolated units of sculpture. The neighborhood of Watts, although a culturally enriched area, was the site of riots in both 1965 and 1992 and should be carefully navigated after dark even to this day. Call for more details.

That is a very dangerous neighborhood and one should be careful when embarking on that trip

One of the great gems of LA
By BigDiesel, 03/10/09
This is a true testimony to the streets of LA. Built by a local and has withstood riots, earthquakes and God know what else. Not in the best neighborhood, so only go during the day. Well worth it.

Beauty from the streets
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/18/08
I've been to the Watts Towers on more than once occasion, and they are always a wonderful experience. While they appear from a distance as if they're only steel structures, when you get up close and personal they are bedecked with colored stones, glass, tiles, pieces of soda bottles from earlier decades. A most amazing use of materials. There is a patio area where you can sit and observe the towers, also decorated with tiles and stones and plaster. Bring your camera. Sometimes there are celebrations going on nearby. While the city itself is notorious for having the potential to be dangerous, the Towers appear to be a safe haven for a tourist and I would encourage anyone of any color to experience them. It our era of corporations, zoning committees, and declining civil liberties, something like this would be impossible to build today.

be careful
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/17/07
This is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America. Have fun but be careful. Keep your doors locked while driving through the area.

Unique Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/30/06
I've visited many places all over the world, and this is one of the highlights. Astounding to think it could have been created by one man with a vision. Did he use scaffolding? The only comparison I can think of is the buildings of Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona. Much the same sort of concept, but of course Gaudi used teams of builders and craftsmen.

Nothing like it
By A Yahoo! User, 12/16/05
there's nothing I can say I disliked about it at all. I liked the story behind the towers and how it was made by things that were donated by local friends and eveb strangers.

Once in a million years!
By Bud G, 12/12/05
Take all three views, long from Graham & 107th; medium from 107th St and close up if the tour guides are there. Nothing like it. Buy a book at Art Center and learn more.

American Gothic
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/04/05
This is on of the most impressive landmarks I have seen in this country. Especially because of its location -- South Central LA, where two most devastating police brutality incided riots took place in the past 40 years or so (1965..) The fact that an Italian Immigrant who spent decades in the building of this monument and dedicated it to the neighborhood and then disappeared only adds more poignancy to the mood for a visitor. The breathtaking form of the three towers silhouetting against the low-lying houses and the LA sky makes them larger and taller than they really are. The hand-made work is amazingly beauitful when you understand the process SIMON RODIA used in the making of the structure and its decoration. The end result is a work of art full of passion and optimism for the place and its people. I was very moved when I visited the place about 20 tears ago. I'd be happy to trade a chance to visit Getty's Museum for another time when I can come back and cherish the WATTS TOWERS again.

Impressive!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/06/05
The creator of the tower used ordinary objects such as broken plates and glasses and an enormous amount of time to create a mosaic tower. Even if the artist's vision is not to your taste you have to be impressed with the degree of creativity and dedication. This is not glitzy or Hollywood-like at all - it is the work of an extraordinary neighborhood artist - so makes a nice break from the glamor and excitement of the other most typical tourist destinations in Los Angeles.
