Castaic Lake State Recreation Area

Description

This area features a man-made lake with 29 miles of shoreline and 8,800 acres of land to hike, bike, ride horses or just get back to nature. The 425-foot-tall Castaic Dam attracts a lot of attention and picture-snapping. And the lake is separated into two sections which is the lower lake for swimming and rowing and the upper lake for sailing, power boating, fishing and jet skiing. Boat rentals are available and there are plenty of picnic tables. There is a bait shop for anglers and a mini-mart for snacks, drinks and ice. This is a fun place to spend the day exploring both land and water. Call for more information on various events. The open hours of the place vary, so check the website before you make a plan to go there.

Do not go to 4th of July here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/5/11
The only thing we were able to do was watch fireworks after a 15 minute late start. No swim, no fun, no food, no jumpies. They falsely advertised and we sat with bored children for 4 hrs because patrol was like hound dogs and made everyone get out of the water 20 minutes after we got there. At 5 p.m. until 9:15 we waited with nothing to do....

Castaic Lake Fall Visit
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/15/04
Castaic was the destination of a family trip from over 2000 miles away and it was well worth it. The weather for early October was perfect, and despite some very rude Germans, this was the best camping ground we saw for the whole trip. Reserve early though. Most sites in the "A" or "B" section are on the grass, but "C" is entirely in the dirt/sand. Avoid at all costs. Hiking around the lake was wonderful and rewarding. Herons, Crows, Peregrines (?) Redtails, Coopers Hawks, and a pair of immature Bald Eagles were seen. But no sign of rattle snakes or the mountain lion reported to be in the area.
