This museum, founded in 1924, is certainly one of Southern California's forgotten gems. The collection here contains a wealth of Middle Eastern artifacts, some of which are more than 2,000 years old. Collected by explorer Antonio F. Futterer during his years abroad, some of the smaller items here include lamps, bottles and coins. The impressive mummy casket dates 600 years before the birth of Christ. Today, Holyland Exhibition can be visited only by appointment for a small fee, which covers a tour and refreshments. Disabled access is limited to the ground floor.
The number of artifacts here is astounding and the tour guide was so well informed and gracious! I did not find that there was any offensive racist content in the material presented and I am non-white. In fact, the tour guide reported that Japheth, father to the Asians, Indians, and Hispanics, was the most blessed as the numbers of these groups is greater than that of Shem (Caucasians/Jewish). The Exhibition is not owned or supported by any group and its sole support is the nominal fee of $2 for children, $2.50 for adults for a 2 hr guided tour. We learned so much about the Holyland, Biblical customs, culture of the area, history, the Bible, and left wanting to come back to see more! Will definitely share our experience with friends and urge them to come with us.
We felt that the entire tour is set up to prove that God's chosen people -Jews- and Jesus were from Noah's white son, Shem. Having never heard this version of the bible and not caring what color Jesus was we were rather offended by the racism we felt at the Holyland Exhibition. I must also say that we are white people and still felt offended.
A lot of history here. A must see, go with your church, friends and relatives. Answers questions you might have had and some you didn't think about. I left there wanting to dig in to my bible with the help of Fullerer's study guide I purchased there.
The Holy Land Exhibition is an AWESOME day trip for all ages. I recently had the opportunity to spend the day with my 10th grade son and my retired mother. We all really enjoyed the intimate setting and wealth of knowledge that Karen- our tour guide was able to provide. We traveled through time it seemed & left feeling enriched both naturally & spiritually. I highly recommend this Holy Land Exhibition...Exceptional!
One of the most unique places I have ever been to!
Wish I could have stayed longer! I learned more about Biblical history in 2 short hours than at any "church" .
It was presented from such a nuetral standpoint and you are assured of its
Perfect for anyone of any faith, religious or not!
One of the most amazing places I have ever seen in Los Angeles!
The mere size and scope of the collection is breathtaking!
The tours are so entertaining and educational! You will want to visit more than once!
Just make sure you make a reservation before you go!
We came down to Southern California for the usual theme parks, but a relative in the area told us about this and made an appointment. Our teenage sons and "busy" daughter aren't easily impressed, especially by museums, but they seemed remarkably taken with this display and the informative presentations by the guide. If you can't make it to the Holy Land, I think this is the next best thing!
I visited the Holyland Exhibit yesterday, and was given a tour by Betty. I live within a mile of the Exhibition, and had heard about it for a few years. I would never have expected the experience I had. Betty is fascinating and she and her family have been the caretakers of the Exhibition for years, running it in a completely low key manner. Her passion for the Exhibition and the life that she leads spreading the teachings from the Exhibition's founder, Antonio Futterer, will leave you humbled. The diversity and quantity of artifacts is amazing. And the history of this place and its founder is equally amazing. It's a beautiful place to visit too...can't be beat for $2.50!!
2 hours zipped by just like a blink of an eye.
Filled with rich collection of a few thousand years from coins to war weapons to coffee makers to game tables to dolls and 2300 year old mummy casket.
Reduced size ark of the covenant and many things mentioned in the bible or Torah.
See the bible history come alive in this place as the curators tell you stories after stories in the bible that relates to the very things you are looking at.
