Olvera Street

Description

Years ago, one of the summer rituals for L.A. children was a new pair of huaraches from Olvera Street and maybe some Mexican jumping beans. Nowadays those rituals are a year-round treat on this cobblestone street, which is a block-long cornucopia of traditional clothing and accessories, Mexican art, giftware, leather goods, novelties and restaurants. There is also a Visitors Center where tourists can appreciate the complimentary screening of a film which depicts early life in Los Angeles. Olvera Street was created in the '30s and comprises the area known as the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument, which is the site of the city's beginnings. Free tours are given to the public by the Las Angelinas, a non-profit organization.

Latin America in Los Angeles
By Jeanette, 9/26/05
Olvera Street is a great place to take the kids and enjoy a corn on the cob, raspado, or fruit waters that are typical of various countries in latin America. The history in this little section of Los Angeles is also educational for the children.

By exex280, 9/26/05
Olvera street is a relaxed lo-cal. Great for old or young, it brings classic L.A. culture to the constantly evolving Los Angeles community. It brings people, food, and music together in a comfortable enviroment suited for any tourist or local Los Angelonian.

Best Shopping North of the Border
By dot, 9/26/05
I love the food here, the music, the colorful dresses and bangles.... What's not to love for those who want to experience the cultural beauty of S. California's past and present cultural influence. If you are looking for a palce to visit with the kids or a fun night out on the town, this is a great place to visit. As for folks who are decorating their homes and patios with a Mexican flavor, there are some great buys and works of art for your consideration scattered in the shops. Definately a best of LA place.

The REAL Los Angeles
By Tasks, 9/24/05
I've been here several times.. we ALWAYS go when theres a Holiday - like Cinco de Mayo and Sept. 16 .. It's the best place for Mexicans to come to feel like they are back home.. (Or for anyone else who wants to see Mexican culture and the REAL Los Angeles) Olvera street is where Los Angeles began and there is history there. Everyone living in Los Angeles needs to go here at least once, ESPECIALLY if you're of Mexican roots.. Anything you need for your home you can find here - candy and toys you remember from when you were a kid growing up in Mexico, music, restaurants, dresses for first communions and other events, ETC. ETC.

Growing up om Olvera
By Richard, 9/24/05
Living in Los Angeles you grow up with the sense that you are always part Latin. Between the venders burittos and the bits of Spanish you actually understand, you feel as if this street is a little part of Mexico. The historic values and culutral customs make Olvera Street a must see for the city of Los angeles.

Take the Train
By Karenr, 9/20/05
Easy to get to via Metro and Amtrak. Walk to Chinatown. Olvera St has many shops and cheep eats. Hop on the Metrolink subway at Union Station and go anywhere in town.

We never get tired of it.
By Pat C, 9/17/05
When I was young, in the 1940s) a trip to Olvera Steet was an adventure because we lived in Pasadena. When my children were young it was the same experience and now that I have grandchildren it is the same for them. Our family loves the small shops and the restaurants. There are always the native singers wondering through the streets adding to the festive atmosphere. Olvera Street is also an historical site depecting early life in Los Angeles. Not to be missed.
