La Brea Tar Pits

Description

Once upon a time, Rancho La Brea or La Brea Tar Pits was only a Mexican land grant. Now a park, the tar pits have been the world's richest deposit of Ice Age fossils. More than 40,000 years ago mammoths, saber-toothed cats and dire wolves freely roamed the Los Angeles basin and became entrapped in the natural asphalt of the tar pits. During the summer months, visitors can observe the ongoing excavation from Pit 91. A visit to the on-site Page Museum is a must. Check website for further details.

Interesting, but there are better sites...
By Christopher, 10/2/05
A neat thing to see if you're in the area, but don't make any special trips to see this. Just a bunch of tar... Also keep the kids away from the ledges.

It was ok.
By Ben, 10/2/05
If you're into artifacts and fossils, than this is the place for you. It was quite small. Some things were interesting such as the see through glass window with the scientists doing there thing, cleaning fossils and the sabre tooth sculpture. Nevertheless, it was ok.

Love it there
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/29/05
I was 9 when I went there for the first time, which was 30 years ago. I love it and glad my mom took me. I was really facinated with dino's, like any boy was, and found out so interesting historical information. I wanted to climb on them but the security guard wouldn't let us. Take your kids here. Not a great neighborhood so park close to the pits.

Awesome!
By N/A, 9/27/05
It's an awesome place to visit - you learn a lot and see many new things that you did not know before. There is a lot to see, so plan to spend at least half to 3/4 of a day there.

I can't wait to go back.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/27/05
I really liked this museum place because there were so many historical displays and film showings that kept me entertained all the time. I didn't expect much of it at first but the museum had little bit of everything with exhibits, historical datas, and short 30min film, and earphone explanations of some of the artifacts. I can't wait to go back there again!

Educational Kick For the Kids
By S, 9/27/05
I'm a teacher, & I've always had success taking my students here, whether they're kids or adults. There's a lot of interaction & hands-on opportunities. Plus, there are several great lead-ins to not only science, but also history & culture.

I love tar!
By BP, 9/26/05
It's amazing to see bones of extinct animals, still in the tar where they got stuck and died. This is a great place for kids because it will interest them in science.

Best Histotical Attraction
By Ed., 9/26/05
I enjoyed the historical significance of the pits and the way it is layed out. The fact that millions of years of history are located just minutes from the second largest metropolitan area in the country.

The pits are anything BUT the pits!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/25/05
I have enjoyed visiting the La Brea Tar Pits since I was a little girl. Now my two boys enjoy it with me. From the moment you enter the grounds and see the large pond full of tar, to the landscaped areas, where more tar seeps out through cracks (!) you really get the sensation of what it must have been like in prehistoric times when the whole area was nothing but sticky, smelly tar. The animal bones that have been recovered are in excellent shape and well displayed. Our favorite is the Sabertooth Cat, but the wall of wolf heads is awesome too. We also enjoy watching the paleontologists and their assistants painstakingly sort through fossilized remains to find the most minute grains of ancient pollen. Whew! The museum contains lots of info, hands-on displays, and is suitable for even the youngest child. Afteward, let the kids climb the outside of the building; it's all grass! My boys love rolling down the gently sloped sides -- great for burning off a little steam before hitting the L.A. freeways.
