Davey's Locker Sportfishing
Davey's Locker Sport Fishing has a rich fishing tradition dating back to the 1940s. This tradition has carried through the years, and Davey's Locker's captain and crews are some of the best trained and respected fisherman in Southern California. With half-day fishing trips offered daily, visitors are finding the huge variety of fish pulled from the sea make these day trips very popular. Popular species pulled from the sea include giant white sea bass, halibut, red snapper, kelp bass, barracuda, and over two dozen others. Davey's Locker's fishing trips are enjoyed by both beginners and the more seasoned fishermen.
This landing is terrible for first time fishermen, but Great for Me!!! Their bait is groupon, living social, yelp, and travel zoo discounted fares for their sportsfishing or deep sea trips. Their targeted catch is newbie potential fisherfolk who dont have a clue what they are getting themselves into. To further entice the contemplating potential future fisherman to "bite", they post pictures in their ads of guys holding huge tuna or yellowtail or a stock photo of a private yacht trolling fancy gold $1000 big game fishing rods and reels. This seals the deal for the unsuspecting first time fisherperson and thousands of them bite...so many in fact, that its impossible for them to book a time to use their "discount voucher" without fishing on a boat loaded to capacity or simply too crowded to fish.
When they get to the landing, they have to pay all kinds of bs surcharges for this and that and will discover, if they have the misfortune of having to rent tackle, its not the fancy, nice gold reel pictured, but some crappy combo caked over with saltwater corrosion that has maybe a 1 in 3 chance of working properly. The captain goest through the rounds at a snails pace to conserve fuel even though nearly all of the passengers have coughed up an additional surcharge for fuel...maybe this is also a ploy so they dont have to spend so much on bait since less fishing time equals less bait used by the passengers, so more money in their pocket. With that many anglers, the fishing is less fishing and more tangling and untangling lines and there is no fish caught that even looks like the fish pictured in the ads they baited the deal-seekers with. The captain gets on the loudspeakers talking about how its just one of those days...the same as he did the day before and the same as hell do the next day. If you've ever been on a real fishing boat where the captain and landing operators put in a real effort to get the paying passengers on fish, then you quickly realize, all the fishing has been done before anyone has set foot on the boats out of this 1/2 and 3/4 day boats out of this landing. Discounted coupons and vouchers are both the bait and the hook. The deceptive pictures in their ad help them set the hook and help them target the first time party boat fisherperson, because only they are gullible enough to believe they will have a chance to hook a 40 lb yellowtail or a tuna off a half or 3/4 day boat during the winter months...ROFL!!! What an awesome joke! I really hope they keep this practice up..this way they will attract all the gullible newbs to their landing and keep them away from the other landings that run quality boats which catch fish and not fishermen. Its just like Sanddab fishing...except this landing is using travelzoo, groupon, yelp, etc to bait their voucher hooks...then they wait for a while, then all they have to do is reel in all the suckers! Brilliant! Sometimes they will do a set with one voucher deal....load up their anglers to capactity over a weeks time. Then a month later use a different voucher vendor and do the same thing with overlapping expiration dates so they double their catch for the same time frame. Who cares if the boat can only hold so many many people for a given amount of time...I mean fishermen are not supposed to be good at math right? So all the passengers get on board packed tighter than sardines, and when they start talking to each other, they're like, "what...you got a travel zoo deal?...I got mine through living social...I didn't know about the travel voucher deal! Then someone else overhears and says..."I got mine through yelp...what living social deal!" Duped! Brilliant! Well, there may all kinds of limits on quantity for rockfish and other species of fish, but for the travel voucher fishermen, there's obviously no regulation or bag limit for SUCKERS!!!
It was a bittersweet experience for my family. The staff, and Captain made our experience quite comfortable. We were able to respect my Mom's/Nana's wishes with grace and dignity. My sister and I have agreed to have our ashes spread over the same body of water. We have the coordinates tattooed on our forearms. Thanks everyone for your professionalism and warm and generous hospitality. We will return. Oh! My 12 year old baby girl got to assist the captain with driving the ship. (AWESOME)
Your crew were helpful, cheerful & friendly. A sure sign they enjoy their work & the company they work for!! Thank you for having separate boats for school and camp groups:) Relaxing, smooth, quiet says my spouse! Very informative. Great trip- saw mother/ baby blue whale & lots of other sea life.
Great trip! I have been whale watching 3 times this year & this was my 1st time actually seeing whales! Excellent navigation by the workers- they were very helpful. I'll be back next time in Newport Beach!
