Cliff's is Pasadena's favorite used bookstore, conveniently within a block of Vroman's (Pasadena's favorite new bookstore). I used to live within walking distance, and as they are open until midnight there's nothing like being able to walk down to a great bookstore when the mood strikes. I always found the selection better at Cliff's than other Pasadena bookstores. Like any used bookstore, the best thing about Cliff's is the chance discoveries, but I could often go to Cliff's with a book in mind and actually find it.
However, the most important thing about a used bookstore is somehow intangible--you just know you're in a real one when you get there. Cliff's is one of the good ones, well worth dropping in for a pleasant and relaxing visit and browse.
It is worth mentioning that prices are reasonable to good but not excellent: I don't generally find the "fifty cent treasure" category here. However, so many area bookstores that did have some of those have come and gone that I'm glad Cliff is better at pricing his books. Pasadena would be a much poorer place without the pleasure of a late-night visit to Cliff's on the spur of the moment.
