Cow's End (The), Los Angeles

This place is the friendliest, most laid back coffee shop. Full of real people, but somehow never really full, always at least half empty. Locals love it. One can go in without shirt or shoes and full of sand. One can go in rollerblading or on any other king of weird wheels. There are usually no kids around (Cold Stone is more alluring and is really really close, so that's where all kids get sucked in) but these people welcome kids. Actually, I saw a baby musical class going on there every Friday. Many people come here to study, and it has a wonderfully relaxed and quiet atmosphere. Best coffee, and only place across several continents where they really know how to make a breve latte. Good food too. Definitely a winner. It's been here, unchanged, for 35 years. I hope it stays here.

Cow's End is a friendly local Venice hangout. Easy to get to by bike. Coffee is hot and good, of reliable quality. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Very good tea selection. The upstairs is a best kept secret place to meet in groups. Not too many places around Venice accomodate a friendly meeting of 5. Upstairs is quiet with plenty of tables and chairs. Rarely busy or full. Parking can be a challenge, but there's almost always space along the canal for the dedicated driver.

I have frequented the Cow's End for a few years now. I go here for the staff. They are always friendly (so give them a tip), and they know your drink if you go often. The coffee could be better- I often find grinds at the bottom of my cup. The food is great, especially the salads, and they make really good smoothies. It seems like often there are too many Venice weirdos outside on the patio. Way too many slimy dudes trying to flirt with any girl they can. But it truly is a great place to spend some time studying or just hanging out.
