Blue Beet Cafe, Newport Beach

Overpriced drinks, a cover charge, cash only bars, hardly anyone there on a Saturday night all made for a crappy place to go. The bouncer originally wouldn't let my friend in because he said he was 'too drunk', the guy didn't even have one drink yet. So you can add jerk bouncers to the list of negatives. Soooo many places to go in Newport Beach why put up with a crappy bar charging at great bar prices.

Sorry about that YAHOO, but the overview is very dated. The Edmund Velasco jazz project (while being excellent musicians and a great show) has not played the Blue Beet for at least 5 years. Hats off to the Blue Beet for still offereing live entertainment in Newport on most nights, but make no mistake, it definitely turns from a restaurant into a bar/club after 9:30 on the weekends. This is a high energy venue catering to those in their 20's & 30's though revelers from all demographics have been spotted having a good time.

Blue Beet does have something going for it with the lay out and decor, but that is about as far as it goes. If you like live music that is way too loud, you will also enjoy this spot. Seriously, the live band on weekends will leave your ears ringing for a week . . . come on man, please turn the treble down and turn up the mids! While it does have three stories to offer somewhat of different atmospheres, the $5 cover to get in and typical Newport Beach "douchbags" is not worth is if your a regular guy looking to grab a pint and maybe meet some honeys. For girls, the lack of anyone with substance will probably hinder a fun "girls night out". Anyone that has hit ANYWHERE in Newport in the past few years knows that it has gone down in the quality of it's patrons hitting the bar scene and Blue Beet is no exception.
