Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
This world-famous museum is rather a zoo displaying the creatures of the surrounding desert in their natural habitats. Located in the middle of the Sonoran desert about a half an hour drive from the city center, it also provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The gift shop has an excellent selection of Sonoran desert souvenirs. This is a must for any visitor staying in Tucson for more than just one day.
This is definitely worth a trip! The drive there is spectacular with all the saguaros against a dramatic mountain backdrop. Although the museum was busy, it was very hot at 11am. Bring or buy water! There's a nice coffee shop and gift store. The trees do offer a canopy of sorts, but it is not shaded. The property has been there since 1952 so things have had a time to grow. There is even a cave to explore. Animals and aquarium. I would suggest a visit in Spring when most of the desert plants are blooming. Once the heat sets in the blooms have faded. I would definitely return during a cooler period. Worth the $9.00 admission fee.
This place is the best museum I've ever seen - and I've lived in DC for 3 years and experienced all the Smithsonians.
Great interactive exhibits, hands-on animal demos, an amazing hummingbird exhibit, beautiful grounds, animals a plenty, and something for all ages. A must see. Really.
