Reviews for A Day In The West--Horse & Jeep Tours: 6
Most boring jeep tour ever
By A Yahoo Contributor, 9/6/11
Booked the day in the west jeep and horseback riding tour out of sedona. Was picked up at the hotel which was the best part of the tour. Jeep tour was terrible no red rock to be seen never mind climbing them. Pretty much took a dirt road through the dessert for an hour 1/2 to get to the horses. The guide talked more about himself than the surrounding area. Horseback part was a little better still nothing to brag about. My friend went on Pink jeep tour next day said it was great. Save your money DONT use this tour!!
Went on the 1.5 hour long horseback ride in Cottonwood. I searched for a Sedona ride but for some reason no one rides directly in Sedona. After driving there myself (a van ride was included), I paid and joined the other riders to wait for the ride. Helmets optional. The girl leading us gave a quick demo about how to hold the reins, mount, and everything else for a new rider. I had ridden before so I wasn't confused but a woman next to me seemed overwhelmed with all the info. Ride went well, was also a fellow riding near the back to make sure nothing happened and swat horses that slowed down. Guide gave notes on passing rocks and history of the place. Horses were well-behaved but loved to snack on passing brush when they could. The fellow also took our pictures, was conversational and held my helmet after I took it off from getting a headache. Ride was just long enough for most riders. Pretty scenery. We went through a river and down a couple of easy hills. They do give a discount for online reservations. Had a nice time. Riders looking for a faster ride should pass this up, as they don't lope but only walk.
The tour was the Red Rock west tour which takes you thru the dry creek area west of Sedona. The drive was fun and the scenery was beautiful. Our guide/driver was Mike and he was very knowledgable and was full of helpful information about the area. We took this tour because it seemed it would be best for our 2 and 5 year old. They both had a ball bouncing around on the trail. Would definately use the tour service again.
1) Completely disorganized. Changed the pickup location on us - we got to a closed dingy office with no one there at 8:30 am. Another couple had been waiting since 7 am!! Finally someone showed up, to let us in. Had to use a disgusting filthy bathroom, horrendous facilities if you can call it that.
2) They are too cheap to purchase any normal licenses for the jeep tour. We did not go on a single red rock and drove aimlessly around the desert. Boring and useless, a waste of time and money. Stick with the pros - Pink Jeep or Red Rock (red jeep) tours.
3) Horseback ride portion was great but contact Trail Horse Adventures directly. You don't need these clowns. They did not even tell the horse ranch we paid for lunch as part of our tour.
4) Due to lunch mixup, tour rep promised to issue a refund of $18. Instead they have now overcharged me $141 which I have to waste time trying to resolve with them.
5) Did not mention that pick up / drop off at our hotel was available. Watched others who dealt directly w/ the horse ranch get dropped off at our hotel while we sat like idiots making the rounds until we got back to their dingy office.
Completely unprofessional low-quality operation. Don't bother. I would give negative rating if possible, worst ever.
We had a great time on the sunset tour thru the Coconino National forest. Chris (Australian guy, think that was his name) was very accommodating and did as we requested and took us flying thru the desert on the tour. He had lots of interesting tips about the high desert and gave us some good advice on hiking around the Sedona. One of the really cool parts of the trip was stopping with a view of the Indian ruins and hearing a story about a bank robber hiding out in that area.
The ride is really bumpy and dusty so if you don't like that sort of thing this is not a good idea for you. This company seemed less commercial and more like a small private family run company (which we really liked). Would highly recommend this jeep tour to anyone in good health with a sense of adventure.
We enjoyed the jeep tour and riding. The off-roading was fun but not our style ... we hung on pretty hard to the jeep and hoped not to fall out ;) The riding afterwards was better. My daughter is a beginning rider and had a great time going through streams, etc. Just let me be clear, we LOVED it.
There was a dinner at the ranch also, but it turned out we were not scheduled for it. Too bad, it would have been a good ending to the day. When you make reservations you may want to check exactly what you are getting.
We plan to go back next time we visit Sedona.
