Red Planet Diner
If they gave an award for the most peculiar place to dine in Sedona, there's no doubt that this diner would win, year after year. Where else can you sit next to a eight-foot-tall alien or order Lunar Linguini? More than a hundred UFO photos are featured in this unidentified-style eatery. Enjoy a Meteor Shower Shakes with your Vulcan Veggie Burger and mingle with the aliens. Most meals are in the USD6-15 range, with alcoholic beverages priced from USD3-6.
Walking into this place, you can tell the owner had a very fun time putting this place together. They have converted a classic Americana diner into something that fits on the set of "Earth Girls are Easy." You expect Julie Brown to be your waitress.
The menu is classic American diner food at slightly upped prices for the tourist crowd. However, talking and walking around the place makes this a pleasure. You can tell the owner is really onto the pulse of the conspiracy / UFO scene with lots of MJ-12, Grey Alien and Pledian symbols, here and there. If you ever listened to Art Bell do a UFO show in the middle of the night, this place is a must when you are in town.
If you can't take a joke, don't come here. This place has a better sense of reality than you.
About 1 1/2 months ago, my fiance and I decided to have a wedding rehearsal at the Red Planet. We have seen them on the Discovery chanel and they were talked about on chanel five several times so we thought we would give it a chance. This was definitely a treat. We had about 30 guests with us and were treated like royalty from the minute we arrived to the minute we left. The service was wonderful and food was outstanding. The price is very affordable and the portions...wow! We cant express our gratitude enough from the management to the servers and the wonderful cooks. This place is highly recommended. Thank you so much for a memorable evening.
In my opinion this is the worst restuarant in all of Sedona. It's horrible. I live in Sedona and will never go back. Don't even waste your time or money. Their idea of Middle Eastern food is a joke it's the worst falafael I've ever had in my life. If you want a good burger go to Olde Sedona Bar and Grille.
This place is highly overrated and EXTREMELY tacky. The service was horrible, the food was cold and the prices were downright ridiculous! I paid $12 for a shot of SMIRNOFF vodka in a small glass of completely FLAT Sprite. I asked for Grape Three Olives vodka and Sprite and was presented with a cheap vodka that wasn't even the correct flavor and watered down, flat soda. I could purchase a bottle of Smirnoff for $12, and it took the waitress FOREVER to even bring the drinks! The food was bland, dry and cold as well as the ambiance itself. There are too many tables and people shoved in this place, and in the winter it is freezing with all of the tables they have packed by the main entrance and people coming in and out! i would never go to the Red Planet Diner again. I also tried to speak with the manager about these issues who was also the horrible bartender (go figure?) and he just brushed me off because I wasn't a "regular." I would not recommend this place to my worse enemy!
I've been coming to Red Planet for about 5 years now, every time I come to Arizona, much like almost everyone else writing these reviews. The first time I went to Red Planet, I thought it was so fun and neat how they have everything set up with the "outer space theme" The food is Excellent, I've tried almost everything on the menu, and never had a problem with anything there. Never been given a "time-share pitch" either. And, the hot chocolate on a cold sedona day is WONDERFUL! This place is not some high end restaraunt, it is a diner, just like the name says. But for the price and the service you receive, you will want to come back time and again. If you are looking for a fancy steakhouse, then obviously don't come here, but if you are looking for a fun experience...and GREAT food for a decent price, Then DEFINATELY come to this place!
Ok, I read the reviews before trying out this restauant; everyone including our hotels employees bragged about this restaurant! Boy were they right. I can honestly say that this is one of the most unique places wwe have attended. Our service unlike one of the readers/writers was outstanding and he was a guy. The food was great. The atmosphere and management. For giggles i asked who the owner was and wanted to know if that was their son that one of the writers talked about. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! . Whoa to my surprise she was a Gorgeous gal who has no kids!!! Very very accomodating and friendly. You also get a ton of food.... It's actually alot. Enjoy it, if you go to sedona and dont try it, your really missing out especially of you have kids- very reasonable!
Our young male waiter was far more interested in messing with the hair of the waitresses than in earning his salary. I ordered a glass of wine that he failed to deliver; a salad that came with the meal was never provided; the baked potatoes we'd ordered morphed into mashed potatoes when delivered, and when we protested the error we were told the kitchen had run out of baked potatoes so we'd got mashed instead. Omitted here was a long list of choices that we might have been reasonably offered if asked what we wished to have if indeed the baked potatoes had run out, rather than this merely being one more mistake made by our waiter. The waiter never asked how I wanted my steak done, so I queried how the cook had decided to cook it. "Medium", our waiter replied, as if it was perfectly normal for a chef in the US to decide how to cook a customers steak. Had I been asked I would have ordered the steak medium rare, but that obviously was not an option now. Our waiters final mistake.. bringing our bill before we had requested it and before we had been asked if we wished for a desert and/or tea or coffee. It was pretty clear that after his terrible service he felt that the sooner he got rid of us the better. The food was reasonable but our waiter's attitude was more that of someone serving a prisoner food who should be grateful for whatever he gave them, than someone who was intent on adding value to a customers dining experience. One further grip with the management.. the absence of name tags leaves me unable to personally name this appalling waiter. Bad idea management to have no name servers. This particular waiter is a serious liability to the profitability of your venture. His devil may care attitude left my wife and I wondering if he was the son of the owner. One of the few times when I've added a 1 cent tip to a bill hoping that perhaps the management might just get the message, when they reviewed the profit made that evening.
Hearing about this restaurant from out of state guests made me want to try it out. We had a party of 12, that were accomodated with a warm smile. ( very hard to find these days). It took the server a few minutes to get to us, but overall the service was wonderful. The food is great, though large portions. Hey your getting your $$$ worth. The manager, which we believe was also the owner was a complete sweetheart, and a little beauty! She checked up on us and the server several times. It is a family atmosphere, great for kids!!! We will ALL definitley be back.
After reading the reviews prior to our trip I put this on the list of restaurants to check out because I love fun places... the atmosphere was tacky and the neon red lighting at night left me with an uneasy feeling. It's a neat idea to decorate with 'otherworldly' things, but it seems like it was contrived. No music either, all I remember hearing was the clanking of dishes from the cooks area. Burger was dry, service was okay. Bottom line - this place is overrated!!
If you like paying tourist traps and $5 milkshakes this is the place for you. There is nothing that special about the Red Planet Diner other than some rather cheap model spaceships hanging from the ceiling.
