The first restaurant to open in Tlaquepaque shopping and gallery village combines Mexican, Southwestern and Native American influences. Voted Sedona's best Mexican restaurant for 16 years running it is a favorite to enjoy a house special Margarita Magnifica. Spanish-style furnishings, arched doorways and brightly colored tableware afford a festive feel. Burritos, enchiladas, tacos, tostadas and quesadillas make up the majority of the menu. Navajo Pizzas (similar to fry bread), Chiles Rellenos (stuffed chiles) and Chimichangas are also worth a try. Main courses are mostly in the $12-18 range.
Lunch at Tlaquepaque plaza came down to a choice between Mexican or French cuisine at Rene's. My brother-in-law wanted Mexican, so that was our choice.
I had the beef chimichanga, and it was very good. It was shredded bef, not ground beef, and was nicely spiced. I choose the enchilda sauce on top.
You can choose most of the entrees a la carte, or with rice and beans. I wished I's skipped the sour cream when the waiter asked, because there were several big dollops on the plate.
On the side, I had "guacamole salad," which was very nice. And the lemonade.
My husband and I stopped in because the restaurant looked so charming from the outside. The server told us the specials for the evening (typical Mexican entrees) and we each decided to try one. The food was average; however, we were quite surprised to see our bill. The price of each of the specials was double the price of any other entree on the menu! We left with the impression that they are out to make money off tourists who are passing through town and will not be repeat customers. If you go, be sure to get prices up front!
