Sugar Bowl Ice Cream Parlor
This quaint cafe has been serving since 1958, and offers a full menu in addition to fantastic fountain treats. Classic, turn-of-the-century pink-and-white ice cream parlor decor and whimsical wrapped-wire chairs and swivel-stools complete the look. This retro favorite features savory soups, sandwiches and salads. Ice cream cones, sundaes, floats, shakes and sodas are available to satisfy the sweetest tooth. Bring a few friends with you to try the gigantic multi-person sundae, which is featured with more than a dozen scoops and toppings.
My family and I visited the Sugar Bowl this past week and could not have been more displeased with this ice cream parlor/restaurant. Reading past reviews, we were excited to visit a nostalgic ice cream parlor but our experience left us with a bad taste in our mouths.
The food itself was mediocre, at best. The ice cream was fine (the root beer float and milkshake were solid), but the hamburger and sandwiches that we ordered for lunch were of lesser quality than that of most fast food joints. Our server, who was in a fight with another co-worker while serving us, could not have been less interested in assisting us. The parlor itself seemed dingy and in need of a good cleaning.
I would pass on the Sugar Bowl if visiting from out of town. We certainly will not go there again if visiting the greater Phoenix/Scottsdale area.
I was there on the 8th of September 2007. I told the hostess that I have knee problems and could not sit at the high chairs at the counter but I was willing to wait for a table. After they seated 3 couples who came after me, I was really upset and asked to speak to the manager who MOVED AWAY FROM ME!!! One of the patrons tried to pacify me by saying that none of the hostesses / waitresses knew why I was there. Come on. It's a really small place and they practically had to step on me to greet the couples. I walked out, really offended. I have been there before (with a friend), but I definitely won't go again and I'll be sure to tell everyone I know. (By the way, I talked with one woman who said she had two friends who also had the same experience there.)
The first thing you notice about Sugar Bowl is all the pink- which suits this place just perfectly. The food is simple yet tasty- lunch is especially a great price. But save room for dessert! The ice cream is so rich and creamy. The ambiance, the food, and the good value is what makes this my favorite ice cream parlor.
Being a local to Arizona, this has always been a favorite of mine! I love the icecream here, and the food is not too bad. One of the best parts is that I can go there with my boyfriend (we are a gay couple) and we are not treated badly.
I don't know who gave this place less than 5 stars, but I know it's true - you can't please everyone all the time. While we were in Scottsdale for Spring Training, we made it a point to visit the Sugar Bowl everyday. In fact, for us, it is the Sugar Shack. This is absolutely a term of endearment. Frankly, I can't tell you what to get because I had a little of it all. Bil Keane does the place justice with The Family Circus. The Sugar Shack is a feel good place where you can indulge in the most mind-numbingly pleasant treats. I swear they're laced with crack. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, late snack, go . . . eat . . . sugar. Bless you, my darling Sugar Shack. (This review is startingly accurate, though a bit melodramatic.)
The ice cream at the Sugar Bowl is truly amazing!!! But, you must eat somewhere else first. The food is very blah (no flavor, cheap ingredients) and there is nothing on the menu you couldn't make at home for a lot less money. So we suggest you go for the dessert and that way you will not feel disappointed!
I was just in there 03/08/06 and was ignored by 3-4 staff who were standing in a corner chatting. After 5 minutes of waiting and staring at the menu I left. I suggest maybe asking for a manager before being seated so your not ignored. There won't be a next time for me as there's too many places to eat that welcome customers.
