Drive through one of largest parks in the United States that covers a staggering 16,500 acres (6677.3131 hectares). With many lookout points, South Mountain Park, offers fantastic views of Phoenix and the surrounding valley. Summit Lookout is at 2,330 feet (710.18 meters) and highlights the enormity of this sprawling desert area. Remember your sunscreen, hat and drinking water when visiting Arizona's best park.
I grew up in Phoenix, in the early 60's no place in the world like it..As a young girl they had trail rides where we could rent horses by the hour. Mom would drive us girls up and pick us up several hours later. One of the best memories of my life was spent riding the trails on south moutain. Us girls loved it. Forty years have gone by and every time I go back to visit family or friends, I look upon the moutain.. still and recall just how beauiful it realy is.
South Mtn is the perfect place to go whether you want to go for an early afternoon hike or a scenic drive after dinner. It's fun to drive up the winding road that leads to one of the best panoramic views of Phoenix. It has miles of trails to hike as well. One of the best places to visit.
I loved taking my boys out at nite to Dobbins Lookout to hike down trails and catch millipedes, see geckos and rattlesnakes, etc. The drive early inthe AM is beautiful and cool in the summer if done before 0900. I miss it now that I live back in Nevada.
