South Mountain Park
Drive through one of largest parks in the United States that covers a staggering 16,500 acres (6677.3131 hectares). With many lookout points, South Mountain Park, offers fantastic views of Phoenix and the surrounding valley. Summit Lookout is at 2,330 feet (710.18 meters) and highlights the enormity of this sprawling desert area. For visitors, the Interpretive Center takes you through the heritage of the area including mining and botanical history. If you prefer an experience out of the car, hike by the marked trails and study the preserved petroglyphs. Carry lunch and enjoy the park's picnic areas with kids in tow. Remember your sunscreen, hat and drinking water when visiting Arizona's best park.

About 40 years ago I took my troop of Boyscouts on a hike through this park. I can still remember this little sojourn. In my mind it IS the biggest city park in the world. We went in from the little town of Guadaloupe which I think is on the eastern side and hiked about ten miles turned north and came out I think on Central avenue. I seem to remember there was a parking lot there. (Had to be, the bus was there to bring us back to Williams AFB) When someone uses the expression "It was a walk in the park" I can tell they've never been the South Mountain Park The scouts learned how a couple of lessons, the value of good clean water and how to remove cactus needles from a persons being.
South Mountain Parks provides a beautiful view of the valley for absolutely no cost. The drive up to the park is breathtaking, also. It gives you an opportunity to see the mountains up close without having to go on a long drive. Highly recommended!
Growing up on the west side of
Phoenix AZ. I have many memories of
the desert landscape that south MT
park provides. An array of plant life
some of which are indigenous to southern Arizona only.
There is also an abundance of wild life. Quail to coyote rattle-
snake to creepy crawly. A couple tons of rabbits. I've even seen
a few mule deer. My favorite animal
in the park is the horse. Horseback
is the way to go At sunset.
It's a long and winding road to the top. Lookout point is a great place to see the far reaches of the valley of the sun day or night. The views are stunning.
South Mountain is a great place to get the feel of the open desert without going too far from the city. The views are spectacular and it's quite unspoiled, despite all the visitors - hikers and mountain bikers, can't believe they bike these trails!
Lots of hidden treasures if you are observant - we saw lizards big and small, cottontail rabbits, jackrabbits, hummingbirds and javelinas (wild pigs), cactus flowers, squirrels and chipmunks, the desert is more alive than I realized.
South Mountain has a unique beauty. We drove up Summit Drive and hiked for several miles on the National Trail, I think. Huge cactuses, little lizards, hummingbirds, and desert rats make the scenery interesting.
