Horse racing sure, dog racing maybe, but ostrich racing? This two-day March event traditionally plays host to more than 300,000 people and is truly an exercise in the wacky. Jockeys mount the giant beasts and off they go. For those with culinary courage, sample an ostrich burger. More traditional festivities include live music, parades, carnivals and science, technology and agriculture exhibits. Admission is free. See website for yearly particulars.
We go every year. Great fun for the kids and adults too - best to buy wristbands in advance.
There's lots of stuff for everyone -my kids love the free kids area with arts and crafts and ride on toys. It has a typical carnival atmosphere, complete with rides and carnival food.
