Powell Point, the third outlook along the West Rim Drive, is the location for Powell Memorial. This historical marker commemorates the first U.S. citizen to explore the Grand Canyon portion of the Colorado River, John Wesley Powell, in 1869. Access to this point is via the trail system linking the outlooks along West Rim Drive, and by shuttle in the summer months, when the road is closed to private cars.
